I was so excited when I came across triops for my 11 year old son, that I didn't think twice about reading reviews and simply purchased these for one of his Christmas gifts. Why is it that hindsight is always 20/20? Why couldn't foresight be that great? Before you get overly excited about seeing triops grow before your child's eyes, please take a moment to ask yourself this very important question: Do you have a place to keep them that is clean, filled with a very EXACT amount of spring water, is at least 75 degrees in warmth and has a full dose of sunlight most of the time? If you do not, then don't bother with the purchase. Even if you followed the stipulations to the letter (which you do not learn about until after purchase unless you've read all the reviews), you still don't have a guarantee that they'll actually grow. Not to mention the eggs are truly microscopic, float and thus stick to the sides of your container so you are shorted some triops if they do happen to grow. But there is that "wonderful" guarantee that you'll have triops, right? If you, like us, get a bad batch of triops, you can always shell out a few more dollars to have that "Guarantee" fulfilled and another batch of eggs sent to you. Granted, you will have paid a lot for possibly little to no return on your investment. If you are blessed to have triops develop, please note the fine print that they will last an average of 20-40 days. Is it really worth it to pay this much, go through so much hassle to prep for them - to have them live only 20 days for your efforts? I think not. Sea Monkeys, butterfly kits and frog kits do much better than this and cost the same or little more when you factor in the special supplies/treatment required to grow and sustain triops.

Triops are crustaceans that look like miniature horseshoe crabs. Triops have a relatively short lifespan of 20 to 90 days and grow quickly to their adult length of one to three inches. How large they grow depends on the amount of light and food they receive. After hatching, they often double in size daily!
