Toys and Games Reviews of WowWee Robosapien Humanoid Toy Robot with Remote ControlCustomer Review: How To Have Fun with Robosapien Summary: 4 Stars
(...)
After that, suspend your super-sized ego, and just have fun!
This is, after all, a TOY. Not an industrial robot or an "I, Robot" CGI dream.
The price is acceptable for the amount of fun you receive in return, and the thing seems sturdy enough to me. Don't let a 3 year old throw it out a window or let a pit bull use it to chew on, and it should last for quite awhile. It is after all, made of plastic.
Don't like the price? Then either don't buy it or wait until the novelty's worn off it a bit, and get it next summer when it will no doubt be cheaper.
I agree the black coating/paint should be sturdier, and I also think that the thing should not use so many (and two kinds) of batteries.
But you know what? I checked out the put-together robotic kits in Robosapien's same class (programmable, multifunction, reasonably priced) that were readily available at Radio Shack and some other online sources and A) they were all more expensive b) none talked c) they were hard to put together or required expertise beyond that of most young children (and dare I say it--some adults) and were not anthropomorphic.
Laugh if you will, but the fact that he seems human is part of this bot's very hefty appeal with kids and adults alike.
Buy it, don't buy it, I don't really care. But if you want a fun, multifunction, "talking" robot today, then this is the guy for you.
Customer Review: It is only a toy, but it is an Excellent Toy! Summary: 5 Stars
I live in Canada, and I bought it as a Christmas present for my 5 year old son. The unit cost me Cdn$99.
Before wrapping it up, I opened it up and tested it (to make sure it works so that I don't disappoint the little guy on Christmas day).
I think the packaging was good for shipping and display, but terrible for taking it out. Whoever packed it when crazy with their wires. I must have broken a couple of finger nails taking the thing out. But once I got it up and running, I was really impressed.
Yes, it is only a toy. But it is really an excellent toy. I actually spent over an hour checking it out. I barely got to test all the functions. I think I will enjoy spending a lot of time with my son trying to figure out how it all works.
I don't know a lot about Robotic, but it appears to me that this toy was very well designed. It is not another boring remote control vehicle (which we have quite a few "sitting" around in our house). This toy is "unique" and the price is actually very reasonable (given the amount R&D invested by the company). Just think, a plush toy or board game could easily cost you $30 or more.
I don't work in the toy industry, but I have seen and bought a lot of toys in the past years for my four children. With all the toys I have purchased in the past, this (along with the Brio train set) is truly my favourite.
Customer Review: Entertaining for a short time Summary: 3 Stars
I had higher expectations but this was for my son in the first place, I'm not sure he shares my expectations but the robot isn't getting much use so that may say something in itself.
The fluid motion is actually kind-of cool to watch, atleast for a short time.
He can't grab anything but the cup without a lot of trial and error and the objects have to be at his side in just the right place. I was under a false assumption that you could literally make incremental movements like moving the arm and hand to just the right spot then grab etc. you can't, you have a button for "pick up" and that's one motion targeting the pickup to one particular spot - the ankle area.
he looks like he's going to fall down when he walks, he doesn't it's part of the motion, sort-of an overdramatic swagger which is fun for awhile.
He throws things interestingly, that's providing you can get something picked up.
The controls are complicated but with a little time you can make sense of them.
The programing of multiple tasks aren't saveable. you loose them once you shut him off.
So this device is relegated to crashing through blocks while pretending it's doing more things. For the money I don't believe it's all that it's cracked up to be.
Customer Review: Disappointing after 15 minutes... Summary: 1 Stars
I have been anxious to get one of those Robosapiens for weeks. When I received it at last, the outcame was very disappointing. The Robosapiens seems to be made solely in China, the used materials are the cheapest of cheapest and even a vending-machine mini figure has got a better paintwork on it. Concerning the movements of the robot - another guy has mentioned that he gets tears in his eyes when he sees how clumsy the Robosapiens makes left/right turns or how he walks - I can fully confirm that. It's a childs toy and nothing more. I would'nt have spent more than 39.99 US-$ for it if I had been able to test a Robosapien before. The only thing that is great about Robosapien, is the well done Marketing and the much too promising reviews. That's really good work and they even tricked me this time.
+) Marketing and Product-Idea
+) For people aged 6 to 11 years with low demands
-) Older persons get nerved after 30 Minutes
-) Cheap coloration and Materials
-) Left/right turns, walking disappointing
-) Robosapiens can't be charged directly from 110V
-) Promises more than it can keep.
-/+) RF instead of Infrared and Memory EEprom required
Customer Review: Robosapien Rocks! Summary: 5 Stars
I love this robot, in fact I bought two regular Robosapiens and one mini Robosapien. It has a ton of personality, great sounds, and most importantly, it's funny as hell. There are over 67 different moves it can make. It actually walks and turns quite well, and runs for a long time on one set of batteries, which much longer than other robot toys I have.
In addition, there are tons of modifications out there that you can try, to enhance the Robot. Just search Google or Amazon's A9 for "Robosapien Hacks". There are also great free programs that you can use to greatly extend the "play life" of this little guy.
My personal favorite is a free open source program on SourceForge that let's you control him with your voice, and easily create complex scripts to make him do all sorts of wonderful thing. It's great for impressing your friends or making your own robot movies. Unfortunately you need a Windows computer and an infrared transmitter to run the program, but you can get the transmitter for cheap and most of us already have a Windows computer.
Just go to SourceForge and search for "Robosapien". It's called the Robosapien Dance Machine.
