Toys and Games Reviews of Rubik's Cube 4x4Customer Review: A spectacular invention Summary: 4 Stars
The Rubik's Revenge is a MUST for all fans of the twisting and turning phenomenon that has stolen the lives of many. It does have a different feel to it though. Like the 2x2x2, its not rotating on a single axis and, at first, doesn't have a definite color structure. This thing will twist your head around in circles trying to come up with different algorithms and methods of solve. The one downside to it is that it tends to fall apart. Although this may seem like a crucial downfall, you can put these pieces back together. For those of you that are new to the Rubik's Cube and are surprised by this, the 3x3x3 also comes apart for lubricating. I recommend this puzzle for all but do be cautious if you have not mastered the 3x3x3.
Customer Review: Steer clear of the Rubik's brand Rubik's cube! Summary: 2 Stars
If you are at all familiar with the larger rubik's cube, then it is no real shocker that the Rubik's brand is not the best option. These cubes are pretty expensive, but very poorly made. It is prone to break easily, but even if it doesn't, the motion is not smooth at all. The stickers will wear out with a solid week's worth of play.
Your best bet is to track down an Eastsheen cube (best bet is on eBay) or to wait for V-cubes to release their version.
If you are already stuck with one though, replace the stickers at [...] and browse online for a cube-lube (again, eBay is a pretty reliable source), or even just a silicone-based lubricant. That ought to get you some decent use out of it.
Customer Review: For advanced cubers only Summary: 4 Stars
If you've mastered the 3x3 cube and are looking for a challenge, go for the 4x4. As we all know, competitive cubing is almost exclusively on the 3x3...however, if you want to bone up on your cubing skills this is a great training cube.
There are so many more combinations and permutations of cube coloring in the 4x4 design...think about it, there are 96 sub-cubes in this version vs. 54 in the original 3x3 cube.
Like many of the other Rubik's products, this cube is not flawless. Stickers peel easy and there's a bit of squeak in the twist action. I wouldn't use in a competition, but like I said 4x4s are rarely used for competition. Buy as a training aid.
Customer Review: Great addition to my cube addiction Summary: 4 Stars
This is a fun toy for any cube addict. I ordered it, then read all of the reviews about how it doesn't hold up. It seems to hold up just fine for me. It does take a bit of getting used to because the mechanisms don't work the same as a 3x3 but it moves quickly now that I have broken it in. I'm a big fan of the 3x3 and wanted the challenge of the 4x4. I was actually disappointed in that challenge. It took some time to get the hang of the 3, but the 4 was a little too easy to figure out. The 4 takes a bit longer, but it doesn't seem to be quite as fun as the 3 for some reason. In any event, it's a lot of fun to have a couple different ones around to play with.
Customer Review: Another great thinking toy Summary: 5 Stars
This is a great puzzle for anyone over the age of ten. Anyone younger would probably get frustrated with it too easily. Overall it very fun to solve, even if it does get mundane after you figure out the technique. It obviously takes more time to solve than the classic 3x3 cube, but once you know how, it definitely isn't any harder. The cube comes rather stiff (hard to turn) from the factory, but after you play with it a while it tends to loosen up. The only gripe I have is about how easy it can be to "lock" the slices by not having them lined up right, but once you get used to it, you have the problem less and less. Suggested for anyone who enjoys a good challenge!
