Toys and Games Reviews of Rubik's 5X5 CubeCustomer Review: Just be careful Summary: 4 Stars
I don't know if it's a matter of defective items, or differing ideas of what it means to treat a cube gently, or what, but I've had none of the problems reported here with this cube breaking so far. One cubie did start to pop loose one time, but I pressed it back in and it was fine. Yes, this is less robust than the order 4 (Rubik's Revenge) cube which in turn is less sturdy than the order 3 (Rubik's Cube); yes, you do have to be more careful with it; no, you can't speed cube with it. But mine isn't prone to breaking under gentle use. Nor are the stickers peeling off.
I figured Rubik's Cube out on my own, many years ago (not from a book), and when I bought the order 4 cube I found there was much that carried over from the order 3, but there were new problems to be solved too. Proceeding then to the order 5 (Professor) cube, it seems to me there's nothing really new if you have a good understanding of how to attack the order 3 and 4 cubes. There are more cubies to deal with, but nothing fundamentally different. I unscrambled mine the first time in under an hour -- and that's with treating the puzzle gently, and my own lack of speed generally, and a few times I made mistakes and messed up some of the progress I've made. So, if you're looking for a new level of intellectual challenge, this isn't it. And, obviously, it's not for you if you're obsessed with speed.
On the other hand, if you just like unscrambling the lower order cubes just for the mental calisthenics of it, this is a good puzzle. And obviously if you're into pretty patterns, or if you're simply a cube completist, you'll want an order 5.
Just treat it gently, and I think you'll be happy.
Customer Review: Better than expected Summary: 5 Stars
I did order a 4x4x4 Rubik's Revenge Cube here and when I got the cube, it was stiff and hard to rotate. This new 5x5x5 was barely stiff and didn't require much lubrication. I use Silicone to lube the inside of the cube.
The cube is fragile like most cubes bigger than the standard 3x3x3. Though this cube moves very well and is built very well. My only concern is the 8 center pieces on each side. The very center piece of just fine but the pieces surrounding it are quite loose but are at least staying on.
People have actually complained about the cube being heavy, the pieces pop right off the cube a lot and the stickers peel too much.
The cube is heavier than a 3x3x3 and 4x4x4 but honestly, if you can't handle the weight of the cube you are just skin and bones. The pieces will pop right off if you try to speedcube with it or not take care of it; the commonsense stuff. Finally, the stickers will peel off eventually, but will peel immediately if you treat it poorly; scratching it, sliding it across a desk, storing it some place where it can be scratched or crushed.
Overall, the cube's construction is very well done and is not that challenging because I can solve a 3x3x3 and 4x4x4 without any trouble. This is a good brand, Eastsheen (a rival brand) cubes are garbage and this is the brand you should go with.
Customer Review: Fun if you dont mind the stickers falling off Summary: 4 Stars
I've become obsessed with rubik's cubes lately. After becoming bored with both the 3x3x3 and the 4x4x4 I was looking for a challenge. I bought this cube despite the many reviews saying that it is fragile. Right out of the package, several stickers were already falling off. I had to glue them back on. After two weeks Ive already had to glue on a couple more stickers. To the cubes credit though, I had been using it very heavily, solving it several times a day.
It is fun. It's not really as hard as it looks however. If you can solve the 4x4x4, you can solve this. it just takes a little more thinking. Right out of the box, with no instructions it took me about an hour.
Occasionally, when Im really going at it, one of the inside pieces will get in a bind and appear as if its going to break. I still havent actually broken it though, and Ive really put it through the paces.
My cube turns really well and requires no luberication. Rubik's cubes tend to vary on that though, some cubes turn amazingly while others barely turn without any lubrication.
In my opinion, if you really like cubes and want something more challenging, you will like this. As long as your careful and dont get in a hurry while solving it, it should stay together.
Customer Review: A Great Challenge! Summary: 4 Stars
This puzzle is a great challenge. There are so many more pieces to put together, and the smaller cubies feel great in the hand. However, the cube is inherently fragile, due to the much much greater number of moving parts (all held together by each other, buy the way). If you are careful of this cube and buy it from a place you know has a good return policy, it shouldn't be a problem, but it is easy to misalign it by accident and have a piece twist out of its spot...
I don't solve competitively, but I do spin the sides around pretty fast when solving. The durability is really dependent on the tension of your cube, which unfortunately varies a lot and isn't adjustable in this cube. I had a cube before the one I am reviewing, and in 4 days it popped and I returned it. The one I have now is nearly perfect tension, and it turns well and hasn't popped yet.
The stickers peel easily, and that is the main flaw of this puzzle. Fortunately there are sites that sell great quality stickers for cheap, but the cube really should include great stickers stock, the ones it comes with peel within the first solve.
And, of course, its a rubiks cube design, so its fun and educational.
I recommend it!
Customer Review: Lasted less than a month Summary: 2 Stars
My 13 year old son received this for Christmas. It's the only present he requested. He already had mastered the 3x3 and the 4x4, so we thought it should be a fun challenge for him. I never thought of investigating the other puzzle cube brands, but after conquering the puzzle, and continuing to try various methods for solving, the Rubik's cube broke. It snapped at the red, white and blue corner. We attempted putting it back together again, but were not able to reassemble it. When I read reviews about speed solving, etc. I discovered that Rubik's considers its 5x5 cube to be fragile, and does not recommend it for "speed cubing". My son was not "speed cubing", but he was trying to get faster, so, now we know. We purchased Eastsheen cubes to replace his loss, and he has been very pleased with them, the set came with a 5x5, a 4x4, and a 2x2, although other combination deals are available. The Eastsheen cubes have already lasted longer than the Rubik's and reviews everywhere seem to validate our experience with what others found. Sad, but true. A Rubiks 3x3 cube will probably last, but when you want the larger ones, purchase a "speed cube", so the fun will last.
