Toys and Games Reviews of No Stress Chess

Customer Review: No Stress Chess is a perfect start
Summary: 5 Stars

Apprehensive about introducing our smart yet perfectionist (hates making a mistake) [...] to chess, because I wanted him to learn to play without being turned off to the game forever because of its complexity, I bought no stress chess to ease him into an appreciation of chess.

He loves it, his [...] brother loves it, my husband loves it, and I love it! While making moves you would NEVER make in real chess, and abandoning strategy for luck of the draw, games can be won or lost BY ANYONE moving the pieces correctly in as little as 3 minutes! We have replaced tv watching with a nightly family chess tournament during the one-half hour before bedtime!

The pieces have a nice feel and the board has 2 sides - one marked with the correct location of piece set-up and the other a plain board for when we get to "yes stress" chess...

Customer Review: This Game is Fun!
Summary: 5 Stars

I gave this to my 6-year old son as a Christmas Gift and it was the most "played" item on Christmas Day (...competing with new Wii and DSi games...) - No Stress Chess is actually a card game where your playing pieces are the actual chess pieces, but the game works. Now, my son knows all of the chess piece movements and he even wants to use the flip side of the board (normal chess board) without the cards. While the games doesn't really teach strategy (as you are at the mercy of the next card in the deck), it does expose the players to all the possible movements of a chess piece, and the consequences of 'poor decisions' with valuable pieces. My 18-year old daughter (and her boyfriend) have been sneaking the game out of my son's closet to play in the evenings. It is so clever in its design and it makes a great beginner's chess set.

Customer Review: Fun for everyone!
Summary: 5 Stars

My husband loves chess and wanted to teach our 6 year old son. I wasn't very interested in the game, but thought it would be a fun Daddy-son activity on the weekends. I loved the reviews of this product and they were so right. The No-Stress Chess game is fantastic. Even though I wasn't very interested in learning, I love playing with my son (and husband). No-Stress Chess is a faster game, with lots of chance involved (and some strategy, too), and is great fun. My son will ask to play it with me almost every day after school. Now, he's trying to teach his 3 yr old sister how to play. (BTW, that's not going very well!) We all enjoy this game and would highly recommend it to anyone. The game even has ways of making it more challenging and a closer approximation to real chess. Buy one - you won't regret it!

Customer Review: Misleading name, bogus concept.
Summary: 2 Stars

From the description of this chess set you would think that the instructions and cards would teach you something about openings, strategy, defense, value of exchanges, etc.

All it does is put how each piece moves on a bunch of cards and the premise is that you draw a card from the pile and move that piece now. With no regard to whether that makes sense.

I had taught my daughter the moves and she was playing a decent beginner game after two days, and I thought this would teach her a little more.

It includes a decent plastic set of chess pieces and an acceptable cheap cardboard chessboard. Save yourself about $5 and just get a board with pieces. This 'no-stress-chess' concept is obviously cooked up by some marketing person who doesn't even know how to play chess.

Customer Review: Chess-Mate!

UPDATE: March 4, 2007
When we bought the No Stress Chess for our seven year old grandson as a Christmas gift it was because his older sister was complaining that she needed someone to play chess with. Since she and her brother enjoyed playing other games together, the 'No Stress Chess' game seemed the ideal way to satisfy two grandchildren with one gift! Our granddaughter would have a chess partner and our grandson would be able to understand and play chess without being frustrated. I read the reviews, selected this one and hoped for the best. It was a great choice!
I can't believe how much our grandson, age 7, and his sister, age 5 have learned about chess by playing this game! I am impressed. I rate the No Stress Chess an amazing success! CheckMate! ~ The Boss
