Customer Review: Okay chess game for learning, but better sets are available

We bought this chess set to teach our 2 daughters how to play. We were not disappointed, but the girls quickly graduated to the point where they did not want to play with the cards, but couldn't remember exactly how each piece should move on the board, so it still required a lot of personal coaching.
The quality of the game is not as good as I hoped. The playing board, especially, is not very sturdy (it comes folded in fourths). The pieces are a little on the small side.
After purchasing this set, a friend showed us her beginner set, and I would highly recommend it (although I don't know what brand it was). The board and pieces were sturdier, and on the side of each piece it was marked how the piece could move on the board. If you're thinking about purchasing a beginner set for your child, your money is better spent on a higher quality product than this one. Look for a set where the board is one piece and the pieces are clearly marked with how the pieces move on the board.

We homeschool, and I just recommended this game to our entire homeschooling group.
The game has a regular chess game board on one side; the other side has the chess game board with pictures of the pieces on it so you can see how to set it up. Then it has a deck of cards that you pull from to make your move. Each card shows a picture of a chess piece and how it moves. This setup allows you to start playing a modified version of chess right away, without worrying about messing up. It does take a lot of the strategy out and rely more on luck, but it's still fun, even for grown-ups. After you've played a few times, you realize you remember the piece names and how each piece moves. Then you can play regular chess without the cards.
As a grown-up, I always thought it would be cool to play chess, but I was intimidated and didn't have a lot of time to spend on it. Now I'm playing and enjoying regular chess after very little time/effort and so are my 6 and 10 year old children.

This game represents a brilliant concept. I got this game for my 5-year old daughter for Christmas. So far she has challenged me (her dad), her uncle, and her granfather already to complete, outstanding and thrilling games of chess. I said that my daughter is playing complete games of chess using this set!!!
She is learning the movement and capture capabilities of all the pieces. I am able to impart some simple strategies already such as Knight on the rim is dim, and move the center pawns in the opening, etc. We are almost ready to take the jump to LEVEL 2. I am excited for my daughter.
I am supplemeting my daughter's chess education with computer software like Dinosaur Chess and Fritz and Chesster.
CONS:
I don't trust the durability of this product in the long run. I wish the pieces had a wider base, we have a younger daughter who likes to shake things up and the pieces tend to topple. I was a little disappointed with the board quality.

Customer Review: Perfect for any level!

My husband, 7 year old son and I play with this. We have varying levels of experience with and skill levels in chess with me being an absolute beginner (I did not know any of the chess piece names, what to do, etc.). Amazingly, with this game I was able to immediately play without really even reading the instructions! My son would guide me minimally but playing with the cards took care of the rest. Sometimes I play with the cards, sometimes I just use them as references for which pieces are which and how they can be moved. No Stress Chess allows you to grow with the game without having to replace the set and upgrade. If once you've graduated to the intermediate and advanced levels, you can just play without using the cards and flip the board over (one side has pictures of the chess pieces so that you know what sits where; the other side is plain). One of the best games we've bought.
