Toys and Games Reviews of Deluxe Canasta CalienteCustomer Review: The simple fun of cards Summary: 5 Stars
We picked up Canasta Caliente before our recent trip to Mexico and have been hooked ever since. Canasta is a classic South American card game which took America by storm in the 1950's and this card set pays hommage to that time period with fantastic and colorful graphics. The goal is to create as many "melds" as possible (i.e. matching sets of three or more) leading up to the required amount of Canastas (seven cards each) before your opponents. If you lose the hand, you subtract the values of your unused cards from your score. This penalty doubles if you end up with the Caliente card. First person to reach 5000 points wins. Two to six playes. The card point values are clearly marked, making it very easy to calculate your score. The cards themselves are nice and strong, with a glossy finish. We've been running them through a vintage metal Johnson card shuffler, and they have yet to bend or warp. The instructions are simple and well stated, plus there are several quick-tip cards with score values so you can save time. Cards are fun and simple, and Canasta is a high energy card game that is perfect for small groups, travel, or simply passing time on a rainy day. For those of you looking for a swank card game for your next cocktail, lounge, or tiki party, grab this retro-inspired deck and have fun. If you do plan on using the deck on a plane or train, buy the deluxe edition which includes a handy card tray (otherwise those cards will fly everywhere) and make sure you have plenty of room to spread out those melds. Overall, a fun and simple game that will have you hooked in no time.
Customer Review: Luddite nostalgia Summary: 5 Stars
I have fond memories from staying at my aunt's beach house back in the 60's where we played racehorse canasta till the wee hours of the morning. I wanted to drag some of my friends off of Facebook and Farmville to play a game where they actually socialize. Back in the 60's everyone had a card table, card tray and two decks for canasta. Then many people were familiar with the rules of canasta and now they aren't so having a specialized deck to help track scoring makes it easier to show people how to play. It's also nice having an artistic deck like my Magyar Kartya Tell deck with German suits for playing Hungarian Ulti.
The deck seems of pretty good quality. I will see how it wears with time. As for a tray, well playing canasta without a tray is like playing cribbage without a cribbage board. You can do it but it just isn't the same.
A note on the rules for this version: Understand that you cannot copyright the concept for a game but only specific rules. If you don't like some of the specific rules for this version feel free to tune or tweak them. You might want to get a book on card games that shows some of the variant rules for canasta. Like many games it has numerous variant versions.
Customer Review: Canasta Works with This Summary: 4 Stars
I have played Canasta since I was six and I was searching for a card tray after some friends of ours wanted to play cards and the one game we all knew without having to learn another was Canasta. We then tried the Caliente game once and though we found it different we put away those cards and went back to regular deck. The cards are hard to read with their small print for older eyes even though we play with regular not large size decks. Perhaps this situation exists because they are not primary colors and you need to see the differences from regular cards.
The tray, which was why we bought the set in the first place, works wonderfully and the lazy susan turning feature is the best part. So, considering the color issue and printing issue of the cards, 4 stars.
Customer Review: Canasta Caliente is HOT, HOT, HOT! Summary: 5 Stars
Ditto all the 5-star reviews. I love this game. Here's my suggestion for a 5-star evening: Decorate the patio in chili pepper lights, pinatas, and colorful cutout posters. Set up tables with umbrellas. Put a Salsa music CD in the boom box. Set up a taco bar/nacho bar with lots of chips and salsa, and don't forget the frozen Margaritas. And have the friends over for a "fantastico" evening of cards. The bigger the group the more decks you'll need and tables (do 4 to 6 people to a table). This game is fairly easy to learn and play, and gets better the more you play it. Take a siesta as the sun sets for some Mexican coffee and fried ice cream and deal another round. !MUY BIEN!
Customer Review: Very fun game... Summary: 5 Stars
This is a really fun game that will keep your mind running. These cards are much better then using a regular deck of cards to play the game. Point values are on every card & you have the wild & stop cards marked. I enjoy playing this game because there's always conditions to be determined when trying to decide your next move. This game really keeps you thinking. The only problem I've come across is that after a while the cards start sticking a little & they become more difficult to shuffle. Over all though I'd say highly recommended.
