Toys and Games Reviews of Vtech - V.Smile Pocket Learning SystemCustomer Review: Has worked great for us Summary: 5 Stars
We recieved this as a gift for the kids several years ago. The first one we recieved gave us problems, it would go off in the middle of a game, the controller wouldn't work and was obviously not quality. The support staff when we called were very helpful but our first system was just horrible. We returned it to the store we bought it and got a new one. It seems that many others have had the same problem? Maybe it was a bad set in a rush to get out at Christmas that passed inspection?
The new one has been perfect. We have had it for several years now and have had no problems.
We use rechargable batteries but we do not find this to be a battery hog. Sometimes it seems when we haven't used it for a while it will need new batteries but other than that little quirk, not a problem.
It is easy to operate. The knobs are big enough for young hands to operate with very few problems.
I am not convinced this is educational. It is all relative. This is more educational than playing a video game with nothing educational about it. However, I am not convinced my young children have learned anything by playing the games that are made for this system. The games are good reviews of skills already learned and that nice.
This is not something you can throw in your purse and pull out when you need it, it is a bigger system than a small game boy. However, it is more educational, easier to play, and the games are not bloody, gory or inappropriate.
My children have loved this system and have used it and played it a lot. This system we have now has seen many hours of use and we have not had the same problems that other parents have mentioned in their reviews.
Enjoy.
Customer Review: Sturdy, Keeps them Entertained! Summary: 5 Stars
Got this for my Daughter when she was 4 and its been about 1 1/2 since she had it. She has dropped it, done did it all to the poor thing and it has survived it all. She actually learned a lot of the games/activities on her own which I found amazing, considering when I tried playing some of them, I was like wow and this is for little kids. Her friends come over and when she doesn't want to deal with them anymore, she breaks it out and they are entertained for as long as she lets them play it. That she figured out on her own! All in all, she has to many games for it and loves it as her friends. Some of the parents of got it for their kids and unlike some have reported, none of our kids have had any problems with them breaking or not working. Oh yea, good investment would be the optional A/C adapter. Yea I did recharge batteries for a while, but they are only good for on the move, not at home. Best part of it, is you can hook the thing up to the TV! So even cheaper than a Wii/PS3/360! lol All in all you can't go wrong getting this for ya kid! Her cousin has the Leapster and when he comes over, he drops his to play with hers if she lets him...
update Mar/09. My daughter has since upgraded to a Nintendo DS, but still plays with this when she is fed up of her DS. I got a whole bunch of games for it when Toys R Us had them for like $10 a few months back. Sorry to hear about so many others having issues, but hers is still going like a champ. Scratched up, but still works fine! The new one looks nice, but no more kids to get it for. :-)
Customer Review: Bought it for X-mas Summary: 5 Stars
We got our son the console v-smile last year for X-mas he was 2 at the time and has played with it non stop. So this year we are getting the pocket .We have never had to replace the console ocasionally you have to unplug it an plug it back in but show me any elctronic device that dosen't have a quirk or two. We are actually looking forward to the 8-9 hour drive to grandma's house this summer with the v-smile pocket it's going to be great . Think about this to the parents that have both the console and the pocket, and complain about having to buy both ,you go on a long trip an your lil one wants to be able to play their games on the TV is it better to lug both systems around or just plug the pocket into the TV ? What if the pocket gets left behind at say grandma's house, well you still have the console at home to play till the next visit to get the pocket back. The pocket is great for travel but the console has advantages too like the A/C adapter no batteries to burn through at home. As well as the add ons like the gym mat, the keyboard, and the art pad. You can't exactly use those with the pocket version. So I highly recommend to buy Both the console and the pocket you'll be glad you did! I know we are! For education and fun V-tech has really done one heck of a job! BTW If you have the console system and are going to get the pocket the A/C adapter for the console works on the pocket!!!!!!! and the headphone jack is a real sanity saver!
Customer Review: My kid loves it! Summary: 5 Stars
We purchased the home system for my 4 year old for Christmas. The graphics kind of stink but heck we're talking about a little kids game. Some of the games are pretty good, some of them kind of stink, that's a process of elimination. My problem was that my daughter didn't take well to the joysticks. She didn't really like playing it. We also received a v smile pocket for Christmas from a relative. That was much better, It costs about $20 or $30 more, but it seems to be easier to play, my daughter took right to it and it also has the video jacks that plug it into the tv, so my daughter plugs it in and plays it on the tv all the time. There really was no purpose in keeping 2 machines that played the same cartridges and that both played on the tv so we sold the home system to a friend for $30, we'd never even really used it much. I'd suggest getting this pocket version. It's easier to play than the home one, even for a young child and we liked that it has the button in the back to flip the buttons around for right handed or left handed kids, that was cool. And of course it goes in the car too, which is a plus. A lot of people complained about them not working but I didn't have the home version long enough to know, I haven't had any trouble with the pocket version in the six months I've had it and she plays it quite a bit but then I really make her take good care of her things and some kids can be really rough...
Customer Review: Has Done Well Summary: 4 Stars
My mother bought this for my 4-year-old son, who is now 6. He just got two new games for Christmas and still loves it. I did have problems with batteries, he played it so much I was either buying new batteries every few days or recharging them every night. Then I got the recharging pack for it. It is hard to get it to lock on to charge, but once that is done it just charges while he sleeps and then works for hours and hours again. There have been a couple of times when it would just blue screen, but my husband just took out the battery pack and rebooted it. Let me mention this handheld game has been dropped, thrown, kicked, dunked, and just about everything else, there's even spots were all of the color has been scraped off, and it's still running like it did when it came out of the package. I have read tons of reviews all over the net and agree with a previous reviewee that perhaps the Christmas rush caused some to be poorlly constructed, we had to wait until mid-January to get ours as the stores were all sold out.
