Toys and Games Reviews of Vtech - V.Smile Baby - Infant Development SystemCustomer Review: A little dissapointed Summary: 3 Stars
I got this for my 24 month old daughter. I didn't let my daughter watch tv/videos before 2 because of the studies showing an adverse effect on neural development. At 9 months this might have been stimulating, but most of the stuff she already knows. For the price I'd think you should be able to take it up a notch. My main complaint is that the cartridges don't have much each and they are kind of expensive. At $15-$20 each they should have more to them, or they should be $5 each so you could easily buy them all. They should go up higher than counting to 5. My kid is 24 months and she counts to 10--by 36 months this will be way too baby for her. The manners on Barney is Please, Thank you, excuse me, and goodbye--I just expected more. The only real value is getting her to follow directions, maybe. Unfortunately the graphics aren't that great so I don't know how motivated she'll be to play along. It isn't really challenging enough to really be educational after 2 years old, and it isn't entertaining enough to be fun for long. I started out with a Leapfrog system, but when the first was defective i thought I'd go with one that didn't require programing--plug and play beats setting up--now I wish I'd stuck with the Leapfrog becasue they have Dora. I'm toying with the idea of trying to take it back to the store and going with the Leapfrog. I wouldn't get this for a kid over 2--but I wouldn't let a kid under 2 play it either so, there you go.
Customer Review: Poor excuse for an educational toy Summary: 1 Stars
The V-Smile baby was the worst toy my now 19 month old son has ever had. He received it for Christmas of 06 and though the packaging is labeled 9-36 months he has had no interest in it. I decided to give it a shot shortly after receiving it, thinking it was a pretty good idea and might be kind of cool. At the time he was 13 months. He was more interested in playing with the bright blue light the receiver end that indicates, "Not for use by children at any time." The remote pad did not have any lights and doesn't make sounds unless it's on "stand alone" mode. I put it away and thought maybe in a few months we can try it again. I tried it again at about 16 months and again at 19 months and still he has no interest in the video games. We have 2 cartridges and neither are of interest to him. The graphics are terrible. The voice is hard to hear and understand. The games are much too slow. The console and the button pad both take batteries which is kind of nice for portability, but the console doesn't even come with an AC adapter. The button pad must be in the direct view and close enough range for the console to maintain connection. This made it difficult to keep a small child from wanting to play with the bright blue light instead of the button pad which has no lights and no sounds. Overall, this is a terrible toy and i'm glad I didn't pay for it. I highly recommend NOT purchasing this.
Customer Review: Good item but not great Summary: 3 Stars
The setup was only about 2 minutes once I got it out of the box. This includes inserting the batteries that it came with. There is actually only one plug that is pretty straight forward, it's labeled video and audio. Plug it right into the T.V. If your T.V. has a video and audio outlet in front or back, then you will be able to plug it in.
I found the graphics on this game to be cheap for the price I paid for it. I only used the demo it came with, other games may be better. The operation of the game was simple and fun to play with. My son loved to hit the big buttons and had fun watching the game do things.
The console has a huge 'ON' button that lights up right in reach of little hands, so my son kept hitting it over and over and over...the cord it way too short too so I couldn't even move the console out of reach.
Pros:
Came with batteries
Big buttons are great to press
Every time a button is pressed something on the screen changes
Fun colors and cute songs
Cons:
Graphics aren't good for $40 paid
Each additional game is $15-$20 so it's expensive
Huge ON button that lights up on console that my son kept hitting
Very very short cord so not many options on where to put the console
This toy should either come with a full version game or be $25 tops with demo game.
Customer Review: Good idea, poor execution Summary: 2 Stars
My son received this as a gift at 16 months old. I lit up when I saw it, thinking it would be a great addition to the few websites we use to learn words, letters, and numbers. I can't tell you how excited *I* was about this product. I set up the system only to be greatly disappointed.
-I agree with the other reviewers about the poor resolution. It's not an entertainment issue as much as it is the fact that the things on the screen only vaguely resemble what they're supposed to be. We had two games with it and tried both - no improvement.
-The music constantly playing in the background was some of the most annoying music I've heard from children's toys and it was so loud that you could barely hear the voices. And the sounds that they tried to pass off as animal sounds were ridiculous.
-My son at 16 months already knew almost all of the words trying to be taught. This may be why it didn't maintain his interest.
-My son liked the "remote" for a few minutes, but found the selector switch at the top to be the most fascinating, which wasn't really helpful for learning anything. After tiring of the "remote," he moved onto the blue light on the console... and then we were done.
With some research into early development, V.Smile could make this game really effective, but as it is, it is completely ineffective - at least for my family.
Customer Review: VTech Doesn't Disappoint Summary: 5 Stars
We had the V Tech VSmile for our first daughter 5 years ago. We utilized a larger television with the VTech VSmile and while the graphics weren't stellar, they were good enough for the money and durability of the system. We bought several of the cartridges and still have it.
We have just bought the V TECH BABY for our second daughter and I hooked it up to a 9 inch LCD television that's in the playroom. The graphics on these systems are perfect on a smaller screen!!! I am very pleased with the functionality for this developmental age as well as for the price point. The screen changes EVERY time our baby hits a button, whether she is right, wrong, or the program is in the middle of something. Great!! My husband and I are both hard core gamers in our early 40s and own all of the gaming systems on the market today which we play on a large format screen, so I believe that this review is fairly accurate based on the technology available.
Consumers can't expect XBox 360, Wii or Playstation 3 graphics for [...] bucks! The screens on the demo systems at the stores are small for a reason. Additionally, we play WITH our children on these systems, so please factor that into this review.
