Toys and Games Reviews of Vtech Preschool Learning Tote and Go Laptop - 2010 Version

Customer Review: Good toy but could be better
Summary: 4 Stars

My daughter got this laptop for her 2nd birthday and she is almost 3 now. It has been dragged, dropped and tossed all over and still works great. My daughter likes it but really only plays the letter game (game 1). The mouse is pretty useless and the screen is teeny tiny.

Some complaints I have is that it is difficult to start the games. Press the activity button, then the number of the game you want, then click the mouse. Even my husband can't remember and the game will not prompt you. This means I need to do it for her again and again, as she will kick herself out of the game. Also, this would be great if it included headphones or a headphone jack. The game sounds are awful (a chirping monkey) and drive me nuts. We are going on a trip and would have loved to take it on the plane if not for the LOUD noise.

All in all though, it's been almost a year and my daughter still plays with this and there are still games for her to grow into too. So for the price it was probably a good buy.

Customer Review: Fun for kids, annoying for adults
Summary: 2 Stars

We'd received this as a birthday gift for our 3-year-old, who loves setting up her computer next to me while I work (just as she is doing now). However, I don't love the fact that the volume control resets to "medium" (which is loud) each time the toy starts. The same goes for the awful background music: it can be disabled, but only until the next time it is turned on. Since both the volume and power buttons are very prominent and are accompanied by animations and sounds, she has as much fun pressing them (and resetting the volume) as the rest of the features.

If you are hoping to distract your 3-year-old while you are working or studying, keep this in mind: every time you sit down to work, you may just find a squawking, bleeping, screeching little yellow laptop appear at your side. It may be a good educational toy for the 4+ set, who could be steered toward using it during specific study times, but I doubt that it will be with us that long. Now I need to find a less obnoxious replacement.

Customer Review: Educational Computer for a 3 Year Old
Summary: 5 Stars

I've never given a review on amazon, but this computer is deserving of a great review. My 3 year old boy received this toy for his birthday and I intially didn't take it out of the box, because I thought I might return it. After several days of non-stop playing with it in the box, I decided he'd like enough to keep. It's been 2 months and he still plays with it at least everyday. I honestly didn't think he could play some of activities, but he caught on. The ones he likes are: shows you a word, one of the letter "disappears", and the child has to press the correct letter that "disappeared"; letters float across the screen and the child has press the whatever letter he sees before the letter reaches the end of the screen; has a sequence of 3 letters/numbers with the middle one missing and has the child fill in the missing sequence.

The mouse doesn't always work on the "rocket" game and my son gets frustrated. Otherwise, this computer is terrific learning toy as well as just plain fun.

Customer Review: Not what I expected
Summary: 1 Stars

My first disappointment was the set up of the keyboard. With our times of technology and the daily use of computers for everything I was not exceptionally happy with the non-qwerty set up of the keyboard. I do understand the why someone would think the set-up of the keyboard and placement of the letters is a good idea for the purpose of learning the letters in order, however, this also means when they go to use a real keyboard they will need to relearn the placement of letters as this is not a qwerty-style keyboard. My son is only 2 but we've been teaching him letters on his own keyboard since he was 18 months old. Due to this it will only lead to confusion. This was a big reason I sent it back.

The second disappointment was the size of the screen. Like I said, I sent this back and found other toys that taught the same concepts, without the task of re-teaching my son a different way once he is older.

Customer Review: Lots of fun but a few durability issues.

We've had this laptop for ages & both our kids have had a huge amount of enjoyment out of it. Unfortunately, the mouse button stopped working. Our kids soldiered on through that by playing the games that used the keyboard, but then the speaker stopped working too. I took the laptop apart to see what was wrong & the fix was pretty simple, if you can do some basic soldering. Here's my blog post on the fix (I'll go into more detail if anyone would find it helpful):

(Edit: do a web search for the words "fangletronics" and "vtech" to find the post - It seems I'm not allowed to insert links in the review)

I only realized how much fun my kids have been having with the laptop after fixing it; they were over the moon when they found it in the living room working properly (after about 5 months without it). They've been playing with it pretty much non-stop for the last 4 days!
