Toys and Games Reviews of Vtech Preschool Learning Tote and Go Laptop - 2010 Version

Customer Review: Great Toy!
Summary: 5 Stars

We own pink version.

I can't say enough good things about this little computer! I'm gonna be very honest... it took me a while to buy it because (and I hate to say it now) but I just thought the thing looked cheesy (cheap)... But man was I wrong! We've had it a while now and my daughter still plays with it for extended periods. It really is a GREAT toy! It is very educational and helps with hand eye coordination -via its mouse training applications. I only regret having waited so long to buy it -recommend for kids 3 and 4.

Other great features are: it's incredibly durable, you can switch mouse for use on either side and it has an automatic shutoff after about 3 minutes.

Only bad things about it are: it is loud even on lowest setting (as many reviewers have mentioned) and the screen is small (but I dare say there isn't one out there with a bigger screen for this price :-).

Seriously, if your child is 3 to 4 you won't regret buying it.

** And I also need to set AEH "Mom of Toddler" straight; the child does NOT need to know how to read in order to enjoy the computer. Child can scroll through and pick which application he/she wants to play with the monkey as his/her guide. **

Customer Review: Volume control issue "Not parent friendly"
Summary: 2 Stars

I own the pink version of this product...identical but instead...pink.

Aside from the following, this beginner laptop has its uses, it no doubt educates but because of the following, this toy can be a parent's nightmare.

** On the lower right of the "screen" flap, there exists a volume control meant for parents, but it is most used by the child. The loudest setting for the volume is not the issue, but the monkey shreeks that play non-stop to give you an audible example of the volume level. I would expect that when pressing this button, you would hear the monkey shreeks to adjust the volume and then continue on...BUT, when the volume button is pressed and then the child walks away from the unit, the monkey shreeks continue non-stop until the unit goes into power saver "off" mode after 2-3 minutes or another key is pressed. My daughter presses this button last and then walks away...leaving me to travel to the other side of the home to stop the incessant monkey from shreeking. If you can handle this sometimes rude Chinese joke being played on us Americans, you will enjoy this product, however in my home, it may well sit in the closet until my daughter can learn not to just press the "monkey button" and walk away.

Customer Review: Lots of fun for my 3 & 5 year old
Summary: 4 Stars

My kids love these laptops. I wanted to buy these, but my husband didn't. He thought my kids wouldn't be interested since they don't resemble "real" computers and the screen size is small, they aren't realistic compared to our computers & the ones they've seen in computer labs at school. HOWEVER, my mother-in-law did buy them for my kids and they love them. My 3 year old is almost 4, and in pre-k, plus she has an older brother, so she's not a "young" 3. Although some of the features are advanced for her she still loves playing with it. My 5 year old son is learning to read and write pretty well. He can use all the features, but this laptop uses varying terminology which teaches him different ways of identifying letters, numbers, using his brain, etc.

My kids are not overindulged, but they do have leapsters, a wii, & have played on our computers, and still have fun with these even though they recognize these as "play toys". My husband spends time with them teaching them how to use it and they really like them. My 3yo daughters only complaint is that she can't type, but that's not something she could do on any laptop. lol!

Customer Review: "Pop Pop" Hits a Homer
Summary: 5 Stars

You'll see toys that look more like "real" notebook computers on Amazon, but I trusted the consumer ratings (and liked the price) and gave this to my granddaughter for her third birthday. Reports from mom are that she's played with it practically non-stop (granddaughter, not mom) for three days and wants to take it with her wherever she goes. We're all musicians, and even mom's reviews about the functionality and tolerability of the music were positive.

Granddaughter more or less confirmed mom's favorable review by getting on the phone, reciting her ABC's ("alphabet," she corrected me), telling me that her own name starts with L, her Halloween costume starts with M (Mary Muffet), and her baby brother's starts with S (spider). Mom said she was impressed because at least five of the games are still beyond her (granddaughter, not mom), leaving room for further activity down the line.

("Pop Pop" refers to the writer--I forbid the use of the word "grandpa" with respect to my person--if my granddaughter tells me my name starts with the letter G, I'll consider lowering my rating).

Customer Review: Great Choice
Summary: 5 Stars

I gave this computer to my 4 year old grandson for his birthday. My daughter left it for last for him to open at his party, because she said he would not want anything else once he saw that. She was right. The Tote 'N Go Laptop became the most desired toy at the party.
His 3 yr old sister, and cousin, jumped right too. It did not take them very long to figure out how to use it, and in no time they were "teaching" each other how it worked. My daughter was relieved, because she could get back to using her own computer, instead of having to give it over to my grandson to play his games. The graphics are very simple, and no colors,
but that didn't seem to make a difference to the kids. It is very sturdy as well. It gets carried around and knocked around a great deal, but keeps working. The kids love the attachable mouse, and found out how to work it immediately. It helps them with their small motor skills, and hand-to-eye coordination. The price was good, and I bought another one for my 3 year old niece for her birthday a month later. A very good choice for small kids in today's world.
