Toys and Games Reviews of Vtech - Nitro Notebook

Customer Review: Our 8 year old boy loves it.
Summary: 4 Stars

My 8 year old is absolutely in love with this thing. And this is wonderful because he has never been in love with anything that was learning oriented like this in the past. I think he is a kinesthetic learner, and this seems to have given him something more to do with his hands than move a pencil. Perhaps most importantly, he can decide when he does it and how long he spends doing it.

Our five year old got one just like it as well. He is not as enamored with it, but he still seems to enjoy it. He puts the memory cards in a does his ABC's and stuff. It seems a little above him right now though, but I predict he will grow into it.

We don't let our kids play shoot 'em up video games so this as exciting as it gets in our house. If your kids already play with an XBox or Wii, this may not hold their attention.

My wife told me she was going to go out and buy two of them at a local store just before Christmas. She knew what the price was going to be (I don't remember what that was). I suggested we look online via Amazon. By the time we were finished, my wife was really happy because we saved at least $25 on the combined total even after shipping, and she never had to leave the house. Not having to go shopping always makes me happy! :)) They arrived super fast as well.

I might rate it a five after we have them longer and see how durable they are. (All our other VTech stuff has been very durable.) But for now, I am rating it conservatively at 4 stars.

Customer Review: Great Learning Product
Summary: 5 Stars

Great product for children. Me and my wife had purchased it for our 5 year old son and have since in the past 2 weeks of having it here for him to enjoy have seen drastic improvement in his ability to problem solve as well as his cooridnation using a mouse. The mouse is great and simple, though maybe just a "tad" too large for his hands atm, it is not too bad really.

Pros:
- Easy to use
- Portable
- 80 Games
- 2 Extra addon activities
- Comes with mouse as well as onboard directional keys similar to some notebook pc's
- Everything can be plugged in/unplugged without having to turn off the unit.
- Batteries seem to last a while in it

Cons:
- Small LCD Screen (could have been larger, at least 2x the current size)
- Power Adapter not included (must be purchased seperately)

Overall, besides my couple of "gripes" it is a good product worth getting for that youngin who is eager to learn and have fun at the same time.

Customer Review: Disappointing
Summary: 2 Stars

I'm surprised by the number of "5 stars" and that is what motivated me to write this review.

My 5 year old enjoys using my laptop and is a whiz at his Leapster, and this led his grandfather to think this would be a great gift. When we opened the gift it looked so neat, I could see the attraction, but I agree with all of those who have talked about the small black-and-white display with very poor resolution. The games are not nearly as good as those on the Leapster and the laptop is pretty large to take places. After a few minutes playing on his laptop, he always asks to play on my laptop. If anything, it has increased his desire to use my computer, and this is not good.

We have a VTECH digital camera that is great - I'm surprised by how poor the graphics are on the Nitro Laptop. Even at that low price, the technology is at a point where they should be able to offer something better.

Customer Review: My Stepdaughter's love it!!
Summary: 4 Stars

My mother purchased two for my stepdaughter's (8 & 9) this past Christmas and they absolutely love playing with them. They like the games okay, but they love the feature where their dad and I can leave messages for them. Every time they come over it's a mad rush to their "laptops" to see what messages they were left. They just love them!!

Personally, I was disappointed that it didn't come with a cord to plug them in with, but hopefully they will be sick of them by the time the batteries die (finger's crossed lol). Also the screen is very small and has no backlight, which makes it very difficult to read, at least for 30 year old eyes. They do take quite a beating though as my SD's have put those thing's through everything imaginable and they're still working great!!

So the kids love them and I could go either way. As long as they enjoy playing with them though, I like them too!!

Customer Review: One Year Old Loves It!
Summary: 4 Stars

I know this toy is not recommended for toddlers, but we bought this for our one year old because she so desparately wanted to use our laptops and this looks like a real laptop. I have been pleasantly surprised by how much use she has gotten out of it. She is too young to actually play the games, but she knows how to turn it on and off and how to press the demo button, all of which seem to be sufficiently entertaining. Also, it has been surprisingly durable. Of course we watch her carefully when she is using it, but she has not been able to pull up the keys or break it, and she regularly opens it all the way and stands on top of it. Most importantly for us, she has found it an adequate substitute for her neverending desire to use our computers.
As for what other reviews have said... yes, the screen is very small (maybe about 3x5 inches?), but for us that has not been a problem.
