Toys and Games Reviews of Vtech Kidizoom Plus Digital Camera - PinkCustomer Review: Much better than the Fisher Price camera it replaced... Summary: 4 Stars
My sister originally purchased a Fisher Price camera for my 2-year old. The concept is certainly a bit above her pay grade, but she was very enthusiastic about her new camera and I was happy she had an option to playing with my Canon. Unfortunately, I was quickly disappointed with that product's poorly designed shutter button (located at the front of the camera and hard to press), and the camera refused to work after being dropped 2 or 3 times.
The Vtech camera has a lot more functionality to it - none of which my 2 year old can connect with - but the primary camera components are very easy to use and well designed, and the video capabilities are a nice extra. It has survived at least a half dozen drops without any apparent ill effects. In a sea of what appear to be fairly incompentent and flaky products, the Vtech Kidizoom is a viable option.
Customer Review: My daughter loves it, but it takes terrible pictures Summary: 3 Stars
My daughter (2.5) absolutely adores this camera. She is walking around, shooting pictures of everything and everyone. It makes her feel like her big sister, who got a real digital camera for Chanukah. (For not much more money!) So, as far as that goes, it's fabulous. And she won't be destroying it any time soon. HOWEVER, even I can't get it to take a decent photo. We have it set to 2 megapixels, but that's not even the issue. Even with the flash, I can't hold it still enough to create a clear image. Her pictures are unrecognizable (to the relief of my husband who she surprised while he was getting dressed this morning. LOL) At this price, I would expect some picture clarity. We will be keeping it, because she is absolutely thrilled with it. But I do wish her pictures were recognizable, even if they were grainy or not very good.
Customer Review: Disappointing but not terrible Summary: 3 Stars
Pros:
- "Girl friendly" coloring
Cons:
- Real resolution of 0.3MP
- Adding SD card made camera unusable. Pictures took 10+secs, navigating the menus took upwards of 30secs.
- Expensive for a toy
- Terrible as a camera
My now 4yr old has been using her Mom and Dad's Canon PowerShot A560 and Olympus Stylus 850SW for the better part of a year now and has taken some incredible photos. Unfortunately even the rugged, waterproof, and shockproof Olympus is just to expensive to allow her free reign with. Unfortunately Vtech hasn't done much to fill this niche with reasonable product.
If you're looking for a "toy camera" there's a lovely Elmo camera. If you're looking for a "kid camera" it is probably acceptable but these companies can do much better if they wanted to.
Customer Review: This camera is FANTASTIC!!! Summary: 5 Stars
I have to admit that I was not very familiar with the Vtech brand prior to this purchase and was a little skeptical. Everyone I had asked advice from in regards to a digital camera for my 4 year old told us to get the Fisher Price camera. Well...we followed their advice and were VERY disappointed with the Fisher Price camera. For lack of a better word, it was TERRIBLE to say the least. Picture was impossible to make out and it was just boring.I returned it the day after the party and picked up the Vtech version. THIS CAMERA ROCKS!!!! The picture is clear, there's a flash, you use as a video camera, you can even add some stamps to the photos like a pirate hat and eye patch. Our daughter is having a blast with this camera. Oh yeah...there's even 3 games in it!
This was a great purchase!!
Customer Review: My 4 year-old loves it! Summary: 4 Stars
My 4 year-old loves this Christmas present. He takes it everywhere with him to take pictures. It is easy to use and set up and even has a movie mode to capture video and a game option to play tic-tac-do, scrambled pictures, and 2 of the same. The picture quality is not all that great for indoor photos but it's good enough for my son to show off his pictures to friends and family. The design looks rugged although we have not tried the drop test. The weakest link is the stick-out joystick. I worry that it will be the first thing to break.
For an older child, you may do better with a second-hand adult digital camera with better picture quality. For our 4 year-old, this camera is perfect for his picture-taking adventures. It also frees up our camera for actual picture-taking.
