Toys and Games Reviews of Vtech Kidizoom Plus Digital Camera - PinkCustomer Review: This was the biggest hit at Christmas time! Summary: 5 Stars
I debated on buying my 4-year old a regular digital camera because they are becoming so affordable; however, I reconsidered and bought this one based on all of the solid reviews it received. When doing some research I was unable to find a kids' camera that was rated anywhere close to this one.
My child took over 1,000 pictures with this since opening it on Christmas Eve. Granted they are not the same quality as my camera, but this has 2 megapixels so the quality is pretty much as expected. It was easy to teach the little one how to operate the buttons, and she was taking good pictures instantly. This camera requires a decent amount of light, but overall it is very good. If I could, I would give it SIX stars instead of five.
It has little "clip art" things you can add to the pictures. You can do it while they're being taken or afterwards with the software that comes with the camera. It also comes with a changeable faceplate that we haven't bothered to change. It is easy to remove though. Along with that comes the cable to hook the camera to the TV for viewing and the cable that attaches the camera right to your computer for easy downloads.
It has been dropped a few times without any damage. That's the point of the bulky design aside from making it easier for little hands to hold.
Personally I don't think my kid would have been ready for this camera prior to her current age. My guess would be that my child will continue to use this camera for at least the next couple years.
Customer Review: A nice camera for kids Summary: 4 Stars
Pros:
- The camera is very easy to use: My 2 year can work it independently
- It's built for abuse. Don't worry about it hitting the floor or getting stepped on, it's clearly designed to take punishment.
- Excellent battery life. Over 500 pictures later, we are still on the 4 original AAs.
- Takes a standard SD card. I put in a 1G card that I bought for $6.
- Includes standard (USB) cables for connecting to your PC
Cons:
- Camera packaging boldly states 2 megapixels but this is a marketing lie. The native resolution of the camera is 640x480 (0.3 megapixels) with the option for upscaling, the same thing you can do yourself in any image editor.
- Don't expect great photos. Without flash, the photos tend to be dark/blurry. With flash, they tend to be grossly oversaturated unless the subject distance is perfect.
- Only 16 Meg of built-in memory. Its not as bad as it first sounds: the photos this camera takes average around 50k, allowing you to put around 320 of them on the camera before filling the memory. That said, my daughter took around 380 photos the first 3 days. The cheapest SD card you can find will solve the problem (with luck you already have one in an old camera).
Bottom Line:
Despite the listed cons, I recommend this camera for small children. Sure, it doesn't take pictures that match an 'adult' camera, but its cheap, easy to use, and virtually indestructible; qualities that are important for a kid's toy.
Customer Review: WOW! Summary: 5 Stars
My 5 year old daughter received this camera for Christmas from her grandmother, as did my two nephews who are 6 & 8. As soon as we had it ready for her to use she was snapping pictures. Sure, the resolution may not be the highest but it is a KIDS camera and most of the pictures she took she deleted anyway. She did take some fantastic outdoor shots where the natural light made the flash not necessary. I recommended my mother-in-law buy the V-Tech over the other brands because I knew that V-Tech produces some durable toys. Well, boys being boys, my 6 year old nephew really put that one to the test when he dropped his camera in the nearby creek. The camera had been submerged for the better part of an hour when my Brother-in-law found it. He took it inside, dried it out and what do you know, it still worked just fine! I obviously do not recommend for anyone to submerge the camera or try underwater shots but wanted to give an example of how durable the V-Tech toys are. My daughter is still intrigued with taking pictures and she is learning how to line up shots and take pictures where you see more than just someone's feet or the top of their head. I would highly recommend this camera to anyone with a curious child who loves to explore the world around them but who may not be the most gentle when it comes to handling and playing with their toys. If your child is used to using a grown-up camera, get them something else because they will not be satisfied with this one and neither will you.
Customer Review: Great First Real Camera Summary: 5 Stars
Santa brought this camera for our newly 4-yr old girl and she has been taking pictures and movies non-stop. It is easy to hold for small hands, there are two view finders so the child can use both eyes, seems fairly durable so far, easy to use controls and a big display. The camera holds many pics...not sure how many because she just keeps taking them (granted half of them are pics of her leg because she is just pressing buttons learning how to use it). It also has a lot of fun features that Isabella is enjoying figuring out how to use like choosing a graphic to put on a picture (i.e. bunny ears, pirate hat, frame, etc.), games, movies and other things I haven't even been able to play with yet. The resolution is not great, but this is an excellent learning camera that allows a small child to learn how to use a digital camera, see where improvements can be made (such as stability and lighting: whether to use auto flash or turn the flash on or off) and correct centering/distance problems. I highly recommend this camera to anyone whose young child is interested in photography. The ease of use combined with fun activities allow a child to become very excited about a new hobby. It can bring a child away from a tv and out of doors more frequently and not to mention make them more aware of the world around them like flowers, leaves, bugs, rocks, new faces and more. Now if only I could play with it without her knowing... :)
Customer Review: GREAT PURCHASE! Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased this for my 3 year old daughter for Christmas because she had begun to steal my 'grown up' camera to take pictures of everything under the sun. It is an understatement to say that it is a big hit! She absolutely loves it and I do too!
She loves the fact that she can take videos and also play the games on it too. There are 3 games: a memory type game, tic tac toe, and a mixed up picture game in which you need to turn the tiles in the right order to put the picture 'together' again.
The camera has survived a tumble down the wood stairs and several other heart stopping crashes with no effects to it's usability nor the appearance!
Of course the pictures aren't as high quality as on an adult digital camera, but she could care less and thinks it's the greatest gift ever. I was also concerned that she may not be able to easily figure out the functions (i.e. switch from video to games to camera mode)but she was doing it before I even sat down to show her how!
This was by far my best Christmas purchase! So much so that my parents bought my 5 year old daughter a different kids digital camera and it ended up going back and they bought her one of these instead!
I only gave 2 stars for educational value becuase although the camera is highly entertaining and my kids LOVE them, I wouldn't say that they are particularly 'educational.'
