Toys and Games Reviews of V.Smile Vtech - V.Motion Active Learning System - Pink

Customer Review: Wasted Money + Wasted Time = Sad Kids!
Summary: 1 Stars

Vtech-

I have twin 3 year olds. This Christmas I asked their Grandparents to buy them the Vmotion Vsmile game systems. Of course we have to have two because that is the way it is with twins to keep harmony in the house. I have spent more time monkeying with the batteries for these units that my kids have been able to play with them. I have already swapped what I though was the "lemon" out for a different one. Ends up all three were lemons! Tonight, instead of quiet fun family time, my girls sat around watching me swap out new batteries for new batteries on a new machine. They were looking at me like I was an idiot, saying, "Mommy, those batteries no work either?". I've read online that this has happened to others and now I just feel ripped off! I can't even just take these back to the store, because we've purchased 3 games to go with them. To replace them just makes me feel more stupid because they will just quit working again only for me to have to keep taking them back to the store and (hopefully) getting them replace (Every other day?). Come on!

Also, it makes Grandma and Grandpa feel bad because their super cool toys that were such a big hit are now just a big FLOP! Vtech, I want my money back, you can have your toys back that stay on when the off button is pushed and decide one day to just not turn on no matter how many batteries you throw at them.
+++++
I will try to paste their letter below. Pretty much they gave me a laundry list of things that I can try to do to make these things work. After all that one started working again for 5 minutes until it failed again. I can't spend all my time breathing air into these two brand new toys. I am now on hold with their "Customer Service" for 31 minutes and counting. I figure I can write a lot of reviews for the amount of time I'll be in this for. I am very upset at the amount I have spent with these toys. I have invested a lot of time and money and I hope to save you from doing the same. Consider yourself warned.

Thank you for contacting us and for your interest in our products.

We are very sorry to learn of the problem you are experiencing with your
V.Smile V.Motion TV Learning System. We have several suggestions for your
to try. If, after trying these suggestions you are still experiencing
problems with your V.Smile V.Motion, and your product is still within the
one year warranty period, please contact our Consumer Services Department
at the toll free number 800-521-2010 for further assistance and a return
authorization.

1. If the V.Smile V.Motion is not turning on:

First, disconnect or remove any Smartridges,, adapters or batteries.

If you are using an adapter, check it to be sure it is a 9 VDC and
300mA. If it is not a VTech brand adapter, check the output polarity,
the inner center hole should be positive and the diameter of the inner
center hole should be 2.5mm. The protruding metal parts of the adapter
must be longer than 12 mm.
Gently shake the adapter cable to check for any loose contacts. Then
try the adapter with another device other than the V.Motion.
Never have batteries in the V.Motion if you are using an
adapter.

If you are using batteries, check if they have been drained by trying
them in another device. You may also replace the batteries but always
replace all of the batteries at the same time or you will have
different levels of power. Try cleaning the battery compartment with a
cotton swab or cloth and blow into the battery compartment to
release any accumulated dust and/or debris. Clean the battery contacts
with a pencil eraser. After cleaning the battery compartment,
install all new, non-rechargeable batteries. Try to use all the same brand
of batteries.

If your V.Motion is not going to be used for a length of time, always
remove all of the batteries. If you have stored your V.Motion with the
batteries in, discard those batteries and try cleaning the
battery contacts with a pencil eraser. Never have batteries in the
V.Motion if you are using an adapter.

Then reconnect the V.Motion unit to the TV while both units are
turned off. Do not insert any Smartridge yet.
Reconnect the power by using the adapter or installing batteries.

Turn your TV on and press the ON button on the V.Motion. The power
light should be lit and you should see the VTech and V.Motion logos on
the TV.

If you do not see the logos, set your TV to the correct channel to
accept the video input (check the owner's manual for your particular
brand of TV for detailed information). Gently shake the
A/V cable or remove and reinsert the Video In plug to check for a loose
contact.

If you see the logos on the TV screen, turn off the V.Motion unit,
insert a Smartridge, and press the V.Motion ON button again.

If the problem persists, remove the adapter or battery, wait for one
minute, and repeat the above steps.

2. If your V.Smile V.Motion unit turns on without a Smartridge inserted
but does not turn on with a Smartridge inserted perform the following RESET
steps:

Remove all Smartridges, adapter or batteries.
Examine the Smartridge slot for loose objects, Blow into it to
remove dust or debris.
Pull back the plastic sleeve on the Smartridge and clean both sides
of the metal contact with alcohol and a cotton swab.
Insert the Smartridge into the Smartridge slot and remove quickly
twice without turning on the V.Motion unit.
Reconnect to the TV, connect the joystick and adapter or batteries.
If the problem persists, try another Smartridge.

3. If the V.Smile V.Motion unit turns on with a Smartridge inserted but
gives an improper response such as black or blue screen with or without
sound or picture only in black and white or picture on screen distorted:

This usually means the Smartridge needs to be cleaned, see above
cleaning instructions.
Also, Check to see that the V.Motion unit's A/V cables are inserted
correctly in to the TV's A/V sockets.
Check to see that the correct TV system is set.
Perform the above RESET process.
Test the unit with another Smartridge.

4. If the V.Smile V.Motion unit turns on with a Smartridge inserted but
not sound:

The sound is controlled by the TV, not the V.Motion console.
Check to see that the V.Motion unit's A/V cables are inserted
correctly into the TV's A/V sockets.
Check to be sure that the MUTE button is not turned ON on the remote
control.

5. If the TV screen freezes or hangs up during play:

Perform the RESET process described in step 2 above and try another
Smartridge.
Also try cleaning the Smartridge per instructions above.

6. If the unit shuts off automatically:

If you are using an adapter, check to see that the proper adapter is
being used (see Step 1 above).
Perform the RESET procedure described in step 2 above. and test with
another Smartridge.

If you are using batteries, check to see that the "battery low"
indicator shows on the TV screen before the V.Motion unit shuts off. If
so, replace the batteries. If the batteries have not been drained,
performed the RESET procedure described above and test with another
Smartridge.

7. If the Joystick does not respond:

If the image and sound are normal but the joystick does not respond,
try replacing the batteries in the controller with fresh batteries.
If you turned off the V.Motion console, but not the wireless
controller, try turning the controller off and then back to Player 1
position. Reset the console to accept the signal by removing the
batteries from the console and reinserting them.
Make sure the controller's Motion Sensor Signal is directly facing
the V.Motion console and is within 3 to 15 feet of the RF signal on the
console.
Remove any obstacles between the V.Motion console and the wireless
controller.
Turn off any other radio-frequency devices in the game play area.
Do not place the V.Motion console on a metal table or near metal
objects.

We are sure that by following the above suggestions your V.SmileV.Motion
will be operating correctly again.

If you have any further questions or concerns, please contact our Consumer
Services Department at the toll free number 800-521-2010.

What We Think

Fun Factor:

Durability:

(what this means)

The Good: Educational gaming system encourages creativity and problem solving

The Bad: No option to use non-battery power with the console

In a Nutshell: This unique game system promotes active play and makes learning fun

At a Glance

Ages: 3 to 7
Requires: 4 AA batteries and 3 AAA batteries (included); TV; PC to use V-link features

Includes everything you need to get started with healthy, educational fun.

Included "Action Mania" Smartridge features six types of games . View larger.
Easy to Setup and Control
Getting ready for your child's first game is easy. Simply insert the included AA batteries into the game console and the included AAA batteries into the controller. Then connect the console to your TV using the include A/V cable, slide a Smartridge cartridge into the game slot, and you're ready to go.

For each game, there are two control options. Kids can pick to use the joystick as a directional controller, or they can pick to use the motion of the controller itself. This means that tipping the controller left, right, forward, or backward inspires a corresponding motion on screen, letting kids get up and move around instead of staying stationary in front of the TV.

This is extra fun when your on-screen character is doing something fast-paced, like racing down a bobsled course. On the flip side, games that require more nuanced controls are often easier to navigate using the joystick. There's even a switch that lets you decide which way is "up," so the controller can be customized to accommodate right and left handed players.

Lots of Ways to Play Educational Games
It's easy to see why this system won the National Parenting Center's Seal of Approval and the Creative Child Seal of Excellence. A variety of age-appropriate games teach concepts like numbers, letters, and shapes for younger children and let older children work on skills like counting, vocabulary, and matching.

These games feature popular characters like Dora the Explorer, Spiderman, Kung Fu Panda, and Scooby Doo, and they include features that range from races to puzzles to sing-alongs. When kids want to play with a friend or a sibling, there's a two-player mode. And a switch on the bottom of the controller lets you ensure that signals aren't being crossed if the second player comes with his or her own controller.

The included "Action Mania" Smartridge means that your child will have six distinct types of games to choose from right away. One option is to engage in a bobsled race where passing through gates requires answering questions related to counting or more advanced topics like understanding greater than and less than. Another option involves using the controller to balance on a ball and select healthy foods, like pineapple, and avoid "unhealthy" snacks, like sweets. The third game is situated on a tennis court and does an especially good job promoting the development of hand eye coordination.

Club VTech lets parents and kids connect online and participate in a family-centered learning community. The included USB V-link device makes it easy to move data from your home computer to your Active Learning System. Web connect features allow for bonus gameplay downloads that keep kids excited about this learning system, and parents have access to educational advice and special promotional offers.

Overall, the whole Vtech experience is designed to promote interaction and healthy lifestyle choices while making learning fun. Our one minor complaint is the fact that the console uses battery power instead of having a wall adapter, which would eliminate the disappointment of batteries dying in the middle of a game. But if you don't have a convenient outlet, or you want to use the same console on several different TVs, this feature can actually be a bonus.

What's in the Box
Console, controller, wrist strap, 4 AA batteries, 3 AAA batteries, Smartridge, V-link, and user's manual.
