Toys and Games Reviews of Doctor Who - Tardis Rotating LED Mobile Phone CharmCustomer Review: Purely for the fun of it! - amended review Summary: 3 Stars
I bought this to put into my own Christmas stocking knowing that my husband Mr. BikeMan would fill my stocking with cookies and candy (not that there's anything wrong with that). Cheesy to buy your own stocking stuffer, I know, but hey, I just couldn't resist :)
So, first of all, it works perfectly well with my Samsung t349. I keep it on silent often (not even on vibrate), so it is nice to have a visual that the phone is ringing. Additionally, I let the charm dangle out of the zipper pocket of my purse in which I keep my mobile, so I can see it flashing even before it starts to ring.
The light is really, REALLY bright. In fact, it woke both my husband and I up this morning at 3:00 am (not sure why it activated because there was not an incoming call...the only weirdness I've noticed). We had a chuckle about it covered it up with something so it wouldn't happen again.
It does activate if it is near a microwave that is in use. I wish it worked with alarms set on my phone, but that's just a phone issue, not a problem with the charm itself.
If you are a Doctor Who fan, this is a fun little trinket. Couple of strangers have already commented on how cool it is, too :)
** 2/25/11 AMENDED REVIEW **
Last weekend, the keychain started spinning and lit up until the batteries died. I thought it was a fluke, so I bought more batteries. Nope. Started flashing as soon as the batteries were replaced, and it will continue, I'm sure, until the batteries are dead. Problem is, now I can't get them out. :(
I really love this little thing. Grown attached to it even, but I won't be replacing these batteries again - not at $15 for 3 of 'em!
Customer Review: Cute, but be gentle Summary: 5 Stars
-The charm arrived exactly as promised in original packaging in a bubble mailer. Several reviewers have said that the charm wouldn't work with their phones here in the US, I have not had a problem at all with mine. It lights up when I send and receive texts as well as phone calls. It has a tendency to light up randomly at night and around my computer, so I'd recommend turning your phone off at night because this little thing is *bright.* It took a little while for it to "tune in" to my Virgin Mobile X-tc, about 24 hours, after that it worked like a charm (pun intended). Note that I did take off the little plastic cover on the bottom and fiddle with the batteries as per the suggestion on the packaging, that seemed to help a lot. The charm was a little bit larger than I was expecting so it is liable to get caught on things. It's about two finger segments long and one wide, if that helps. The plastic dome around the Tardis is pretty sturdy, what you have to watch out for is where the metal is attached to the string, it seems to be the weakest point so don't put undue pressure on it. For example: don't pick up your phone by the charm or pull it out of your bag/pocket by the charm. All in all, a great little piece of Doctor Who heaven, and a nice conversation piece. I've met several people in the store and at school who have started talking to me because they saw it light up and noticed the tardis! To sum up, it seems to work on Virgin Mobile phones and I am very happy with it.
Just a minor detail, the light comes from underneath the Tardis, not from where the light is on the actual tardis. It's still pretty cool!
Customer Review: Just a simple Doctor Who geek..... Summary: 4 Stars
Originally I got this without reading the description and found out that it does not work with most 3G networks once I received it. But, being a huge Doctor Who fan, I shrugged my shoulders and loved it anyway.
So, for the first two weeks, nothing happened and I had grown to just enjoying the fact that I had the Tardis hanging from my cellphone, the Tardis (with parking brakes on, LOL) ringtone set to my hubby's number, and a cool wallpaper.
But then, one night, sitting in my chair and watching tv, suddenly he and I both noticed a blue light flashing from the corner of our eyes. Lo and behold, my Tardis was spinning and flashing bright blue light and I had an incoming message. Woo Hoo! Since then, it works with about 1/3 of incoming text messages or when my phone connects to a service area as I drive in and out of signal range. It started out slow but now picks up more and more and I love it!
The only problems I've had was the bottom screws on and off and when I first fixed the batteries, I left it too loose and almost lost my Tardis in the parking lot at work as it became very loose without me noticing and fell off. I realized what had happened when I got into my truck and quickly scanned the area. Now, I tightened it more and haven't had to worry about it since.
I have slammed the plastic dome over the Tardis in a drawer, dropped my phone on concrete many times, and had it caught between metal grates without me realizing it. It has survived all that.
I love it!
Customer Review: Flashpoint...The Idiot's Lantern...Blink Summary: 5 Stars
My charm worked exactly as the packaging said it would: it lights up and spins when I'm sending/receiving calls and text messages, when I connect with the internet, and at random times between calls, etc. (The packaging said that it is just checking in with the network when it flashes at random. It could also be picking up signals from other nearby phones.) It's been about a month, and while the batteries have yet to die, my lil' TARDIS is less enthusiastic and active than it was at first.
I was a little hesitant to get a phone charm--although I have always been somewhat zany, I was afraid that a silly little phone charm would make me look like a fool--but buying this little spinning TARDIS was the right choice. I am a student at a small liberal arts college where people are sometimes snobby and elitist, but everyone who has seen my little charm thinks that it is cute and lovely. Let me say proudly that I am a walking advertisement for Doctor Who. The charm opens all sorts of crazy conversations, and it's quite fun.
I love this charm so much that I'm tempted to get the Dalek and Cyberman charms, too!
Customer Review: It's the TARDIS!!! Summary: 5 Stars
I LOVE IT. I got it so I would be able to find my black phone in my black purse or black karate bag - I thought the flashing lights would help.
Yes, it doesn't work right away when you attach it to your phone. (There are no directions except to attach it.) It's a British toy, and I'm guessing being in America doesn't really help much. The package says it'll light up when making/receiving calls and texts, and it'll stop when you're done. Not necessarily true - it lights up when I get calls or texts. And it doesn't light up all of the time. (I have Verizon for phone service.)
So why a five-star rating? I didn't just get it for the flashing lights and spinning action. I got it to help me find my phone. And it works! When it does light up and spin, I squee with joy, and my dad said it was awesome when he saw it spin/light up for the first time (and he barely remembers old!Who). It's the freakin' TARDIS, whether it lights up and spins or not.
If you want it just for the light-up/spinning, then you might be disappointed. But if you want it because you're a Who!fan, then get it. It's awesome! :)
