Toys and Games Reviews of Uncle Milton Uncle Milton Planet Frog

Customer Review: This looked like a great educational and fun gift... BUT:
Summary: 1 Stars

My 7-year old son recieved this as a gift. He was excited and wanted to set it up immediatly. The first thing I noticed is that the habitat is made of very flimsy plastic and the whole inside is also molded plastic. We wanted to order the tadpoles and found that they cannot send them to us in cold weather or too hot weather. It was a big dissapointment. We eventually bought a couple of small frogs from the pet store. They seemed to slip and slide on the plastic bottom and we put in more textured rocks and plants (also plastic but better quality). The habitat needed to be cleaned daily and the water changed regularly. Also, the inside of the habitat would get fogged up and we couldn't even enjoy looking at the frogs. We ended up buying a five-gallon fish tank with a screen top and an underwater filter for the frogs and they are much happier and active in there. This "gift" ended up making us have to make our own frog habitat (which is somewhat costly). I definately would not recomend this product to anyone. However building your own frog habitat from products in a pet store can be fun and rewarding.

Customer Review: I'm sure there's better out there
Summary: 3 Stars

We got this last year as a Christmas gift for my 7 year old daughter. We ordered the tadpoles right away but they weren't able to ship until May. The directions were very easy and the tadpoles did fine, better than some friends who bought their tadpoles locally and died right away. So the tadpoles didn't take a few weeks to change into frogs, (like the directions said) it was actually 6 months. They did send us out more free tadpole food after we emailed a request.

Once the tadpoles turned into tiny little frogs we were so excited and we went to Petsmart to buy food for them. The lady said they would eat these little pellets so we bought those. A couple of weeks later the first frog died. The 2nd one was still half tadpole. Once he turned into a frog I went back to Petsmart thinking that the food was wrong and that he had starved to death. A different person told me to buy earthworms and cut them and put them in because they might want live, moving food. I did that and the frog won't touch them. I don't know if he's eating the other pellets or not, so hopefully he won't die too.

Customer Review: 13 months -- still no frog
Summary: 1 Stars

We received this as a gift and ordered the tadpoles in April 2006. Because we live in a warm climate (Texas) they would not ship the tadpoles (they said it was too hot) until November. The tadpoles finally arrived the day before Thanksgiving 2006. Now, in mid-December 2007, I still have one of the tadpoles: he is small, has tiny little back legs that started forming about 2 months ago, but his development seems to have stalled again. He's still underwater and has a tail. I don't know if or when he'll ever become a frog!

The other tadpole died back in the summer and, to their credit, the company sent a replacement. It arrived in October and has not developed at all in the last 9 weeks.

I have followed the instructions from the manufacturer scrupulously (keeping the habitat clean, using only spring water, etc), and still have not had success. The only good thing is that we now have a great conversation piece: "The Mutant Tadpole"!

I would suggest getting the Butterfly Habitat instead -- it worked wonderfully for us!

Customer Review: Total Disappointment
Summary: 1 Stars

First of all, we purchased this toy from a store that had a much higher price than Amazon, so that makes the experience more painful. Upon opening the habitat we discovered it is made of bendy, flimsy plastic, like the kind many toys come packaged in. Then, we ordered the tadpoles--another $13 on top of the purchase price!!--7 weeks before my daughter's 6th birthday. 12 weeks later the tadpoles finally arrived. We live in the midwest and apparently it is nearly always too hot or too cold to ship tadpoles to us. Once they arrived, we were DILIGENT about following the directions. They seemed to make it clear these critters were specific in their needs and we had waited sooooo long...2 weeks later the first one died. 2 week after that, the 2nd one "croaked", and I wish I meant literally. NOTHING fun happened, no legs, and the water was almost always so cloudy from their food that you could barely see the tadpoles. This toy was such a bust. A complete waste of time and money, tho it seemed like it was going to be a really neat, educational experience.

Customer Review: Flimsy, Overpriced & Extreme Patience and Constant Care Needed
Summary: 2 Stars

My 8 year old son paid for this with his own money in August 2007. He has learned many lessons through this experience. He finally received the tadpole in March 2008. It was hard to see him hope for the tadpole to come in the mail constantly for that terrible amount of time. When we went on vacation we had to get people to check our mail for us in case the tadpole would arrive. When it arrived we were dissapointed at the very thin plastic film type material- almost too flimsy to carry. The tadpole took a very long time to have any evidences of change. Many times we thought it was dead and my son would get upset. We changed its spring water and fed it every other day. We used a turkey baster to remove most of the water and debri, then would fill it with the spring water to the designated line. Finally, the tadpole started to change; it was exciting to see its legs appear. As a tiny frog, it is so cute. Now I have just purchased my first small box of live crickets at the pet store for $3.99. -Ugh- Be aware of what your are getting into.
