My daughters favorite color is "rainbow," so we really were excited to receive this as a gift. However, to see the rainbow well, you need to have the rainbow maker placed near a wall -- which results in a smaller arc -- and the room needs to be dark, really dark. My daughter has room darkening shades and thermal shades over those and it still wasn't dark enough to see the colors brightly.
It can be used with an AC adapter, but it doesn't come with it. A nice option to batteries, but you'll have to shell out some more money or scavenge it from one of your other toys/etc. When on battery power it has a auto-off feature, which is very nice. Wish more toys care with this.

My son LOVES this toy. We bought it at a children's museum and my son uses it as a nightlight. He can turn it on by himself. If you are looking for a sweet gift this holiday season, this is a great choice. The only minus is its limited time for being turned on. My daughter received this rainbow as a gift at 2 1/2. A year later it still works great. It is not easy to see the rainbow in the daylight and ours appears to be a fainter light than shown in picture at night. With that said it is bright enough for us. We both like it a lot. It is a soft light of many colors that looks like a rainbow on the wall. I have not had to change the batteries yet. We don't use it every night but it is turned on about once a week. The light only stays on for about 15 minutes which I like as I don't have to remember to turn it off. I would buy it again.
