Other reviewers have noted problems with this product. I was nervous about buying it after reading their experiences, but ours has been working without problem since Christmas.
My daughter loves this product because she thinks the rainbow is beautiful (I have to admit I am impressed too). She has me turn it on every night before I leave her room at bedtime. It gives off enough light to make the darkness in her room be less frightening, and her focus is on the rainbow instead of on the dark.
I love it because it shuts off automatically. I do not want a night light that remains on all night, and the rainbow shuts itself off after a short time. This is a great night light alternative. I also appreciate how small the projector is.

This toy is pretty cool in that it projects a rainbow on the wall across the room. A few disappointments, however, make it not worth the price that I've seen charged. First of all, it really only works in a darkened room, which does make it fun for a nightlight. There is an auto-off feature so it wouldn't last all night, however. Second, this thing eats batteries! It takes 4 AAA batteries and we replace them at a ridiculous rate. Third, I expected this to be some type of prism that separated the light colors to aid in the educational value. No, it's just colored lights that reflect off a mirrored base.
It's cool and my daughter really loves hers, but I wouldn't pay more than $20-25 for it considering the rate in which it goes through batteries.

In spite of mixed reviews last Christmas I purchased this for my 7 yo daughter. Now a year later I am back to buy one for my 45 yo sister! My daughter and I use this every night. She calls me in for "rainbow time" and we have fifteen uninterrupted minutes to sit quietly, talk over the day or just discuss what flavors all the colors in the rainbow are. In a year I have only replaced batteries once. It's great because we bring it to hotel rooms when we travel or even in our RV this summer. I can't say enough good things about it. It is plastic, so I would put it on a shelf high enough that little hands can't get to it, but once you find a safe place, it will project from the shelf onto the ceiling, we just reach up and push the button.Customer Review: Love It!!!

I purchased this for my daughters 3rd Birthday and she loves it! I purchased it back in Jan. and it still has vibrant colors. I hope we avoid the problem of it not lasting like other reviewers. I will be buying another for my 5 year old for his birthday, or I may try to talk him into the star projector and hopefully it will be as awesome as this. My daughter has a shelf that is about a foot from her ceiling that I placed it on and she gets a great projection all the way across her room. I really like that it shuts itself off after 10 minutes, that way I don't have to go in and turn it off every night to save battery life. My daughters favorite color is "rainbow," so we really were excited to receive this as a gift. However, to see the rainbow well, you need to have the rainbow maker placed near a wall -- which results in a smaller arc -- and the room needs to be dark, really dark. My daughter has room darkening shades and thermal shades over those and it still wasn't dark enough to see the colors brightly.
It can be used with an AC adapter, but it doesn't come with it. A nice option to batteries, but you'll have to shell out some more money or scavenge it from one of your other toys/etc. When on battery power it has a auto-off feature, which is very nice. Wish more toys care with this.
