Toys and Games Reviews of Uncle Milton Moon In My RoomCustomer Review: Great addition to toddler's room! Summary: 5 Stars
I have been accused of rushing things a little bit with my purchases for my son but this was a great Christmas gift. He is only 14 months old but absolutely loves it. We've only had it in his room for three weeks and when I ask him where his moon is he points at it. Sometimes he just gets excited when it's on and the bedroom light is out and points at it and says Moo! Moo! Moo! My wife and I were amazed tonight as I was bringing him in the house from the vehicle he pointed up at a thin, bright crescent moon and said Moo! I had never showed it to him in the night sky yet and he already recognized it! A bit of an amateur astronomer myself, I can't wait until he is patient enough to look through his first telescope. What joys he will find.
The only issue which isn't a problem at all to me is that it doesn't have a sensor to cut on and off with the ambient light in the room. Batteries wouldn't last for any length of time at all if it did this. I have no problem with batteries as I have probably two dozen NIMH rechargeables and I just change out a set when the moon starts to dim. In closing, I would recommend this product to anyone, whether you have a child or not. As one previous reviewer stated, it is very relaxing to have on.
Customer Review: DON"T BUY THIS! It's cool. For a while. But then... Summary: 2 Stars
The good part is this is a cool night-light type gadget and my son has really enjoyed it that way. The problems with it are two-fold. The first is the battery issue, which many people have commented on. I eventually got rechargeables. The second is durability. For something that just hangs on the dang wall, the fact that it conks out like it does is ridiculous. Our first moon lasted a few months before the lights just quit working altogether. I took it apart and tried to repair it myself, but there were no obvious bad connections. Oh well, these things happen, so I replaced it. Well, the replacement lasted a lot longer, but it has just stopped working as well. This is INSANE! It's a set of lights with an electronic timer! It hangs on the wall! It doesn't get tossed around or dropped on the floor or carried in your pocket! Why should it EVER break? Or the remote. I have a remote keyless entry on my car, and that gets lugged around in my pocket, tossed on the table, etc., and it works fine after (at this point) seven years. I can only presume that the guts of this device are some of the shoddiest and cheapest imaginable. It's too bad, because its a neat idea, and as I said my son likes it a lot. But I'm not throwing more money away at this point.
Customer Review: My child has really enjoyed this Summary: 5 Stars
This was a Christmas gift for my 8 year old daughter who is into absolutely nothing but animals. She absolutely loves it. She turns it on every night and her and our other children go and watch it. I even watch it. It has two settings. 1. Is where it goes through the phases of the moon. I was mistaken about how this works, I thought that it went through the phases along with the moon, however, it blinks through them pretty quick. 2. The moon is just set on a single phase of the moon. I have seen them go through both of the settings, there is a small remote control that the child can set themselves. The only problem with the remote is that because of its size it can get easily misplaced, especially if your kids are like mine and would lose just about anything. My suggestion for this would be to put some velcro on the back of the remote and stick it somewhere. Also it has a sensor and turns off when the sun comes up and back on when the sun goes out. It also runs off batteries. Ours came with a cd, which I thought would be something that they could watch on the computer, but it isn't it is just talking about the moon. Overall it was a good purchase, and I would definitely recommend it for a child who is very hard to shop for.
Customer Review: Fun and cool item but not very educational Summary: 3 Stars
This unit is fun and kind of cool to use at night. For its size and technology the image this unit displays is pretty good/sharp. Too bad though that the unit is very basic though. The stars do not twinkle but the disc that holds the image does rotate so the sun/ moon/earth will go in circles upon the ceiling. It would have been much cooler though if the stars somehow twinkled or if the constellations would light up brightly at times so that you could really make them out.
If I had paid full price I would have returned this unit in a heartbeat. However paying $40 for this unit I thought it was worth it to keep. More discs could have been provided. If you want more discs with Saturn etc on them you need to purchase them separately.
Overall I'm happy with the price and the functionality of the unit but I would have been willing to pay full price if it had the features I had mentioned above (ie twinkling stars, constellations like big dipper, orion etc.. .lit up.
If you put the unit on the 'rotation" mode you will hear a slight whirring/bit of a high pitch noise but its not unbearable. I use this unit with its built in timer of 30 minutes to put myself to sleep.
Customer Review: Fly Me to the Moon; Let Me Play Among the Stars Summary: 5 Stars
When you're just turning five and you can think of your bed as outdoors, under a starry sky with a bright moon to watch, the wonder of your dreams are about to begin and the boogeyman magically disappears from under your bed and closet.
Reports from my oldest niece are that her youngest soon-to-be-five-year-old, insisted that the moon be hung up right away in his room, and his father had to dash out to get the two AAA batteries to operate the remote control. The remote control is small and has already been misplaced--and found.
The remote shows all the phases of the moon and can be set to change the phase every five seconds. It also has an automatic shut-off, so it isn't all night draining battery strength. If its current level of popularity continues, I imagine a steady supply of batteries will be needed to support the bulb that illuminates the moon.
I am grateful to an Amazon friend whose review gave me the idea for buying this. It was obvious her daughter liked it, and it is a beautiful thing that a mother can give her daughter sunshine by giving her the moon. And I am happy to know that I can bring a little moonshine into my great nephew's life.
