Toys and Games Reviews of Uncle Milton Moon In My RoomCustomer Review: Up, up in the sky! Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased this for my 7 yr old daughter who loves sitting on the back porch gazing at the night sky.
Between these: MILKY WAY GLOW STICKERS [Toy] and these: Glow-in-the-Dark Colorful Twinkle Stars, her room is fantastic.
(In case you are wondering if your child might like Uncle Milton's Moon, my daughter enjoys dirt and dresses, cowboy boots and pretend make-up, craft projects and reading, etc.)
We hung the Moon on the wall about 10' from her bed, and have the Twinkle stars radiating out along the wall and up toward her ceiling. From there, we placed the Milky Way stickers (each about 5-10" apart) on a semi-path towards her bed and above it.
Every night before bedtime, she turns on her room light, brushes her teeth and jammies up (about 5-7 mins), then jumps into bed ready to be awed. I press the small remote button (30 min timer) and turn off her room light. We then snuggle staring up at the amazing "sky" in her room.
The moon turns on each phase, one added to the next, and then turns them off similarly. When fully lit, it is fairly bright; excellent at chasing away any darkness fears. (We do not use it as an all-night night-light as we have a small hall light for that purpose.)
My daughter LOVES her moon, as does her 19 yr old big sister, Dad, and sleep-over friends.
(Note: We are on the same set of batteries placed in the unit early October, and used nearly every night.)
Customer Review: Uncle Milton might be rotating in his grave at turbine speed ... Summary: 1 Stars
I was really looking forward to this product because it really looked cool and from the labeling on the outside of the box, it seemed as if this product / science based toy did a lot more than was suggested. Let me just break down what's wrong with this point by point so there's no confusion.
1. This Moon does NOT automatically phase at all. You have to manually click through it and the stages are in sharp contrast from each other.
2. The Moon turns itself off after a very short period of time, negating the usefulness as a night light. There are no controls either to make a timing adjustment for preference.
3. When using the remote you not only have to be incredibly close to it you have to point directly at it as it operates via line of sight and not RF. The range is very limited.
4. This thing should be hooked up to the Atomic Clock like most other newer devices that read the moon phases. An incredible no brainer that would've been a cheap mod. Makes you really wonder about how cheap this thing really is.
5. The batteries on this are incredibly ridiculous. Really? 4 AA's for 1 white LED? What kind of cheap Chinese circuitry did they put in this? Wiring from an off-brand 1940's Tube Television? C'mon, Uncle Milton.
6. The number of faulty product reviews must be acknowledged, which only emphasizes my previous point. Typically, I never make any mention of this but it's just overwhelming here.
Point blank ... the last thing I want is "Uncle Milton" in my room, his moon, included.
Customer Review: Put to a Different Use! Mythology! Summary: 5 Stars
Most people obtain this product for a child's room as either a night light or a toy. Actually, I use it a lot differently: as an engaging teaching tool for my college mythology courses. This happy, unusual product immediately captures students' attention and interest as well as their sense of humor. "Today's special quest: the Moon, in our Room. Don't worry! Luna seems moody, but it's just a phase!" :)
The audio program that came with my moon makes a fun introduction to my lectures and presentations on the Moon in Human Culture and World Myths. Students are intrigued by the phases. [You'd be surprised at how little adults really know about our moon---about something that's ever present, but ever changing.] I love to point out to my students how important the moon was (and still is) to ordinary people--before all the computers, clocks, and technology; before all the street lights, lamps, and neon signs. One of my themes is "Are we forgetting to look up at the night sky?" Very effective when paired with discussions the effects of light pollution.
This Moon allows students to focus on the topic, and it's especially fun to turn off classroom lights--lecturing to the glow of this Moon as it changes. Weeks after this lecture students are usually sharing their new found interests and observations of the Moon. Customer Review: Pretty Cool unit but not as portrayed in photos... Summary: 4 Stars
This is a pretty cool likeness of the moon, however, not as good as the photos presented for the item.
It's more like molded grey puffy-looking textured hard plastic on its face/flat back for hanging. The lighting is more like a soft glow which does illuminate a dark medium sized bedroom bright enough for getting ready for bed. It is placed high on the wall near to the ceiling across from the bed. I took the photo with the moon fully lit before hanging.
As far as the reviewer whom had difficulty with batteries draining too quickly, I thankfully haven't had that experience thus far. The light doesn't go on unless I turn it on with the remote, so I'm not sure what I did to disable the reviewers mentioned sensor or maybe mine doesn't work. I have the switch on the back of the unit on and then just use the remote which has 2 buttons to either turn on and through the moon phases to off manually with one button and automatically with the other button without any problem and have used it for about 2 weeks. I am using rechargeable batteries which may make the difference as well as it being on for only a little while before bed. Very soothing especially combined with the Cloud B Twilight Constellation Night Light (We have the Sea Turtle) which sits on the side of the bed.
The price is also reasonable for a seemingly good quality unit.
If any issues come up, I'll update.
Enjoy and God Bless!
Customer Review: Glorified Night Light Summary: 1 Stars
I was really excited to order Moon in my Room for my space loving son. It has been a disappointment to say the least. First of all, it only works with it's remote, which is fine unless you want your child to be able to control it himself and not have to worry that the remote will be lost in the sea of toys that is a 5-year-old's room. And none of us were impressed with the "phases" feature. There isn't a lot of definition, so the light kind of spreads all over the moon, ruining the effect of each "phase." Also, I may be the only crazy one, but from reading the project description I thought that you could program the moon to actually phase through along with the actual moon (so when the moon is a crescent outside, the moon would be a crescent inside). Maybe that was just me not reading closely enough, but if anyone else is thinking that you can program it...you can not. It's just a night light with multiple settings.
Oh, and perhaps the biggest selling point against it is that ours stopped working after a month. (And yes, we've checked and replaced the batteries).
It would be a great product if it cost about a third of what it sells for, but at the suggested price or even Amazon's lower usual selling price, it is a waste of money.
