Toys and Games Reviews of Uncle Milton Moon In My RoomCustomer Review: Even Daddy Likes It! Summary: 5 Stars
-Who Am I?
I'm a daddy to a most curious 4 year 2 month old boy.
-Why & Where I bought
I wasn't looking for it specifically but as my wife & I were sauntering through one of the clearance aisles at Target, thinking perhaps I could find my son a little toy, this Moon In My Room (MIMR) caught my eye & for the $9.99 clearance price I felt that I couldn't go wrong purchasing it.
-Quality (4 starts)
It is a textured, plastic, about 11-inch in diameter, authentic/realistic looking moon. I'm usually rather leery of just buying plastic junk that will break in a short period of time, but this MIMR item isn't so flimsy & appears to be constructed fairly well and good durability & I believe it could last quite a while if it is hung out of the way and off the floor so as not to get trampled upon. The 3-button remote has a little button for OFF/ON, a medium-sized button that will start the automatic cycling of the moon phases that takes 1 minute (5 sec/phase) to cycle through and is continuous, and a larger size button that can be pressed to manually cycle through the 12 phases at your own pace. Like I read in another review-don't lose the remote as it is the only way that you can operate the moon.
Battery Suggestion:
We don't keep our moon on continuously nor do we use it as a nightlight. We use it when we do our "moon viewing" in the evening. But considering all of the reviews I've read about the moon sucking battery juice, I would recommend rechargeables.
-MIMR CD (4 stars)
I kind of felt like I was at a planetarium and the lady's voice on the CD is very serene and lulls you out into space! With the sound effects and actual footage of the Apollo mission it's kind of like listening to a female Jack Horkeimer the "Star Gazer." The CD is closer to 14 minutes rather than 15 minutes like it says on the CD but who's counting anyway :)
The part that I don't like about the CD is that you're going to get some evolution briefly tossed in about 3 or 4 places during the presentation. If you believe in planetary evolution that happened billions of years ago, you probably won't have any issues with the presentation but as I believe in the Biblical account of Creation then I'm going to have to modify the presentation for my son who at his age wasn't even paying attention to what the lady was saying because he was more fascinated with the moon and the lights-so I guess this issue is moot for now.
I think that this could be a reason for the "Age 6 or older" recommendation as older children may be more capable of concentrating on the CD presentation. But I feel the CD presentation is excellent for the most part.
-Educational purposes (5 stars + a moon for this one!)
How can this not be educational? If you would just walk up to someone & ask them what they knew about the moon, I doubt that most of them would even have the time to look up from their cell phone texting long enough to even notice that there is a moon let alone knowing the 12 phases of it. If there are technically more than 12 phases I don't know-but for a child, as well as parents for that matter, to know 12 phases of the moon & when you consider how many other topics you can associate with the moon & solar system, then you have a powerfully educational toy here!
By the way, I eventually threw the box out but before I did, I cut out the pictures of the 12 phases of the moon that my son can refer to.
-Parting Comments:
Would I have bought this toy at the retail price of $20 if it wasn't on sale? Probably not as I am rather on the frugal side but knowing what I know now about it & believing that anything that I obtain for my son is not a loss but an investment in opening up the "educational" windows & doors for his future I could say that I would have spent $20 for it. For those still on the fence about it, perhaps cutting out a few McDonald's Happy Meals & buying this might be better for your child in the long run. But for me, I have a feeling that my son & I will always remember our "moon viewing" nights with Uncle Milton.
