"Classical & Romantic Composers" is an imaginative and fun to play family card game (age 8 and up) that teaches something about Western classical music history. European composers of the 18th and 19th centuries are profiled along with their music, which was composed in three different musical styles, starting with the "Baroque" era and ending with the "Romantic". Most of these composers lived or studied, at one time or another, in Leipzig or Imperial Vienna.
The composers are Johann Sebastian Bach and George Frederick Handel (both from the "Baroque" period); Franz Joseph Haydn, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Ludwig van Beethoven (from the "Viennese Classical" period of the "Age of Enlightenment"); and Franz Schubert, Felix Mendelssohn, Frederic Chopin, Robert Schumann, Franz Liszt, Johannes Brahms, Peter Ilytch Tchaikovsky and Edvard Grieg (from the "Romantic" period).
These playing cards from the AUTHORS & MORE series of educational games have been printed with color portraits and some interesting, if short, biographical notes which include composer birthdays. Like "Authors", this is a "quartet" game. Each one of the 52 cards in the "Composers" deck is printed with four titles of famous works of music by one of the 13 composers. Each card is further illustrated with music-notation graphics showing a key theme, or passage, from the composition the individual card is supposed to represent.
A good example of a card's quotation of a musical theme would be "Papageno the birdcatcher's song" (from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's singspiel opera, "The Magic Flute"/"Die Zauberflote"). If you already have the "Papageno" card you can call on other players for one of the remaining three Mozart titles. Of course, if someone else is trying to collect Mozart cards and asks you for that title, the "Papageno" card has to be surrendered!
Another time, you might find yourself having to fish from the card pile for Franz Schubert's song, "The Trout"/"Die Forelle" in order to complete a "quartet" of Schubert cards. Music-reading ability isn't a requirement for playing the "Composers" game (but it doesn't hurt, either, if you can read the notes). This is a wonderful teaching game and resource for either music lessons or homeschooling. Academic enlightenment aside, it can also be a great impromptu party game, especially if you're having a "Schubertiade"!
