Ty Fletcher Cream Laying Bear / B000FQ2MS2
I may be an adult, but I still like to sleep with a teddy bear to wrap my arms around, and this bear has been my reliable standby for the better part of two years now. The bear is incredibly soft, with silken fur and a soft, floppy body that moves fluidly.
My bear has taken a lot of unintentional abuse, including being hurled across rooms by small children, nursed on by cats, and licked on by dogs, and he's still durable, with all his fur - no shedding with this toy! He's been washed in a washing machine at least once, with no ill effects. Of course, his fur isn't as soft and pure ivory cream colored as the day he came in the mail, but he's held up remarkably well and is still a comfort. I recommend this bear.
With regards to small children: The eyes are hard plastic (I'm guessing, but they almost certainly aren't glass), but they are sunk pretty far into the face, as the picture illustrates. The nose is cloth and is not hard, so this bear seems pretty safe to me, as far as small children go.
UPDATE: After two years, I've decided to purchase a second bear while this model is still available. I've posted a picture of the new bear beside the old bear, to demonstrate how the bear holds up over time.
