Toys and Games Reviews of Toysmith Volcano Making KitCustomer Review: incomplete kit, plus misleading instructions Summary: 3 Stars
I have two problems with this kit (and they're kinda big problems).
(1) The instructions are out of order and very confusing regarding how to insert a plastic soda bottle into the volcano. (I didn't get it figured out before pouring the plaster, and as a result, our volcano's "eruption chamber" was incorrect, which caused a pretty lackluster "eruption." I would have attributed the problem to operator error, as I'm not the best builder in the world, but my very building-savvy brother had to read and re-read and re-read the instructions to finally figure out what I had done wrong.)
(2) To correctly make the eruption chamber, you have to provide your own plastic soda bottle, which you have to cut down and tape back together in order to make it small enough to fit into the volcano. What is the point of ordering a kit if one of the main components isn't provided?
I guess I will probably go buy more plaster, cut/tape a soda bottle and give this another try. At least the molds are re-usable!
Customer Review: Good, easy, educational toy for a resonable price. Summary: 5 Stars
I got this kit for my 41/2 yr old. We made the volcano today and it was a piece of cake. He loves it. We are waiting on it to dry so that we can paint it. Here are a few things to remember when you use this kit:
1) The evolution chamber (the mixture of vinegar and baking soda goes in here) needs to go in first and then the mould goes around it.
2) After you pour the Plaster of Paris the evolution chamber stays inside (it is mentioned in the instructions). So the evolution chamber is not reusable. BUT we made ours reusable by inverting the volcano after it had dried half way through and then removing the evolution chamber mould. Now we can reuse the chamber again to make another volcano. But the instruction clearly states it is a one time use for the chamber. So make your volcano with caution
3) Some people have complained about not having brown color. There are clear instructions at the back as to how to mix different colors to get the desired colors. E.g. red+ yellow + little black = brown.
Customer Review: Great fun Summary: 5 Stars
My 4 year old loved this. He loves projects and helped make the volcano and paint it. In fact we made two, one for his pre-K classroom. He also painted it (with help). The kit allows you to make pretty much as many volcanos as you'd like if you supply your own plaster and paint. The mold is easy to construct and durable.
We've made many, many volcanic eruptions with viegar and baking soda and it paved the way to other science kits. I highly recommend this kit.
Customer Review: Definitely Entertaining Summary: 5 Stars
This is a great product, especially since the volcano, itself, is reusable. I wouldn't say the mold is reusable because the chamber becomes embedded in the mold. The directions regarding the plastic bottle were a bit unclear, so we skipped that part. It still works really well and provides big, bubbly eruptions - especially when you add a drop of dishwashing liquid to the chamber before adding the vinegar. I also bought a book on volcanoes, which made it more educational.
Customer Review: Volcanoes can be fun Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this for my grandson and he had a kick out it. It is really pretty simple and I thought the volcanic eruption would be boring. But I'm not 12 and he got a great time with it. You do have to make the volcano but really it's pretty simple. Good idea to have some paints around and I helped him to make it look like it was a volcano. He still brings it over every once in while and he says got in the vinegar? and I say sure with a smile.
