I love tops - in all shapes and sizes. I'll even confess to owning the Eames video on tops and finding it fascinating.
So when I saw these in a discount bin at Target, I couldn't resist. I bought them for myself, since I couldn't convince the kids the tops were worth spending their $2 allowance on them. Of course, whatever the kids ended up buying was quickly forgotten once I started playing around with these.
You wind each top on the handle, and once each is going, wind the next and try to drop it in the middle of the already spinning one, and so on until you have all five stacked. You can get the whole method down to a science with a little practice, but I'll admit, my four year old wasn't quite able to stack a single one.
Towards the end the tops will separate, and often the upper ones will remain spinning long after they've disengaged from the lower one as it has slowed down.
You can stack the tops in any order small to larger, large to small and varying sizes for an added challenge or just the interest of it.
These make a really cool toy. It's amazing how something so very simple can have so much appeal. I think the first day we had them we played for at least 45 minutes. How many toys can you say that about?
Also, this is a perfect stocking stuffer for any child past the mouthing stage. Maybe 3 or 4 and up? As long as you check the pieces to be sure nothing's broken. There aren't any really small pieces that would pose a risk, so it's mostly just making sure the integrity of the existing pieces is intact.
Hooray for simple, fun, challenging toys! I wish there were more like this!
