I bought the jar of stars because I got my 5 year old great nephew an Uncle Milton Moon in My Room. A solar system and child's imagination are not complete without stars.
According to my niece there are plenty of stars that appear to be strong and glow well in the dark. Of course, they will not glow all night, but the point is that they glow long enough for the child to go to sleep "under them." Judging by the consistency of other reviews, I also advised her to get additional adhesive, as reports are that there are falling stars, and we all know that you can't catch a falling star.
The most important thing for me is that the child enjoys it. It takes the boogeyman out of his imagination, and replaces it with a curiosity for the universe. There was a time that I thought of creating a lightning and thunder toy for my nieces and nephew when they were little and annoying, but a child psychologist advised against it, and I have since mellowed. So, stick with the stars and a moon. At first I thought of a disco globe, but they were too expensive and a little beyond his years.
If his parents have the imagination and time, they might consider setting up the constellations in the sky, but it is more likely, that a child will want to create his own universe.
I hope he does, and he hope he journeys to it in his dreams.
