Toys and Games Reviews of Battat Mirror Pound-A-Ball Toy, Colors May VaryCustomer Review: Great toy! Needs one small adjust that is easily made. Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this for my 11 month old. It's been two months and he still loves it. It comes with a hammer (we immediately lost this), but my son isn't coordinated enough to use it anyway.
Most of the negative reviews I read about this product mentioned that the balls are difficult to push through the holes. This is true. There are small plastic "tabs" in the holes that provide resistance so that the balls don't just drop in. I simply took a fingernail file and filed them down a bit. The balls still sit on top, but with little effort they push though. My son manages the process without difficulty. I can see how the original design is frustrating, but it's easily fixed. Also, I bought toy-balls for cats from the pet section at Dollar General (3 for $1). These work great also. I have not had trouble w/ any choking hazards. The balls are not small enough to fit in my son's mouth.
I bought this with Playskool Explore and Grow Busy Ball Popper which has also been a great purchase for us.
Customer Review: Frustrating!!! Summary: 1 Stars
My son received this as a gift, otherwise I would have chucked it out the window the 100th time he got his hand or binky stuck in it. As other parents have noted, kids like putting all kinds of things in this toy, not just the balls. I reached my wits end with this thing when my boy put a dozen crayons into this thing, then started crying to get them out. Of course they'd all gotten worked down into the middle of the thing, and I literally had to get a set of tweezers/tongs to try to extract them. If I had realized how many crying tantrums this thing was going to cause, I would have quickly shoved it aside in a closet & brought it out only when the person who gave it to us came over.
Give this one a pass, check out other models. There are better designed ones out there that promote the same skills. If I had to do it over again, I'd get one of the Plan Toys pound-a-ball, specifically the Miracle Pounding toy, where the balls stay IN the toy, and don't roll under the chair, couch, etc. and there isn't any room for other things to get permanently stuck!
Customer Review: Great toy, but needs work Summary: 3 Stars
Like many said, it's hard to push the balls through the holes. If adults can hardly do it, there was no way our 11 month old could. There are little prongs inside the holes that can be shaved down or cut off pretty easily with a razor blade. Once those were removed, the balls went in with no problem. We've never used the hammer for it's intended purpose. We've deemed the hammer useless. Our son just puts the balls in the hole with his hands and watches them roll. He's now 15 months old and still plays with it. One of the things I dislike about it is that the top detaches from the base. My son likes to tip it over, and when the base detaches, he can't get it back up to play with it properly...without my repeated assistance. Obviously, if it's on an uneven surface, the balls get stuck in the bottom and don't roll out, which has been an issue when played on carpet.
I gave it 3 stars because my son has loved playing with it over several months and so far, it has been very durable.
Customer Review: Amazingly useless toy Summary: 1 Stars
This is by far the worst toy we have. It was given to us as a present because I surely would not have purchased it.
The balls require a lot of effort to pound/push through the holes. My one year old could not, and neither could I until I really pounded on them. You have to hit the ball dead on otherwise it bounces out of the hole. Hit it too far off and the upper ramp assembly falls down, it is not attached in any way to the base. Once in, the ball merely rolls down three ramps. Utterly uninteresting. My baby has absolutely zero interest in this toy and I do not blame him. However, it did teach him one thing... to pound on anything he can find with the hammer. Personally, I think the last thing a baby needs to be taught is how to use a hammer. Try explaining to a one year old why it is okay to pound on a ball in this toy, but not the trackball for my computer.
Customer Review: My kids love it Summary: 5 Stars
We have this toy for about 4 years, and with 4 kids. All of my kids have loved it. It really doesn't take that much effort to push the balls in, my 13 month old can do it with his little hand. When we first got the toy, it was the first thing they did in the morning, and the newness didn't wear off. They can get toys and other things stuck in it, but it has never been too big of a deal to get them out. I got a little barbie out last week. The balls do not fit in my kids mouths, and I have never had a child get their hand stuck in it, though I can see that would be possible.
This is the toy I recommend for first birthday presents - or I buy it for them myself. Love it.
