Customer Review: Small Return on Your Elbow Grease

Overall I would say the slushee maker makes good slushees. After using it a few times, I can see that what will keep me from using this every day is the small amount of slushee you get for the amount of work it takes. While the instructions say you have to crank the handle continuously for 5 minutes, it has taken me 10 minutes each time to get a good consistency. And after the 5 minute mark, I usually take part of the unit apart to add more ice to make it work more efficiently. Like I said, the final product is everything you would hope for, but you only get about 6 to 8 ounces of slushee out of it! For my son, that's not even a full serving when he's used to getting 24 to 32 ounces at the convenience store. I figure if I have 40 minutes to spare and as long as I can keep the stuff cold, I can combine four batches to come up with about 25-30 ounces of slushee. Now I only cringe each time he wants me to make a slushee for him thinking about the effort that it will take. It cranks easy, but doing anything for ten minutes will fatigue muscles that you don't use every day.Customer Review: Ours works just fine!

We got this toy for our 3 year old for Christmas, since he was begging for it. After reading many reviews here, I was a bit wary, and held my breath through the first official Icee making.
If you follow the instructions included in the box, it should work perfectly. Granted, either I or my husband has to do the assembly, mixing and cranking, which we expected, but really, the toy is definitely easy enough for a 6 year old or so to handle.
Cleanup is very easy, and the toy comes completely apart for thorough cleaning. The machine makes more than enough Icee in one batch to fill both cups that come with it, plus a little leftover for the grownups who may have broken a sweat with all the cranking.
We've made 2 batches now, one with Orange Soda and one with Coke, and they both came out just as they were supposed to. Overall, I think it's a great toy, my kids are happy with it, and so far, no problems. The only improvement I could suggest would be if they came out with a battery-operated version that cranked itself.

The box advertises that this product is "EASY TO USE!" and "EASY TO CLEAN!"-- it is NEITHER. Nor does it make Slushees/Icees. Basically, an adult must put it together. Then, a VERY STRONG adult will have to sit on the floor and straddle the device between his or her legs to hold it in place while fighting to get the crank to move around for about FIVE LONG MINUTES. The adult is then rewarded with less than one little red cup of slushy-mess, which takes forever to get out of the machine (one must turn the crank in the opposite direction with the spicket open to get the "icee" out). Much of the concoction stays frozen in the machine, impossible to reach, even with a spoon........NOT dishwasher-safe. In fact, one must completely disassemble it, wash and dry each piece separately, then reassemble it before each use. Luckily, you will probably only do this once or twice before you decide to throw it in the trash...
I can't believe I wasted good money on this item, only to leave my six year old heart-broken and disappointed on Christmas Day.

My son received this for his birthday and we were about to return it except for the fact that we didn't have a receipt. We already has a shaved ice snow cone maker and didn't need another one like it.
It was 95 degrees today so we opened it up and decided to make root beer ICEE's for my 7 year old son and his friend. We followed the instructions exactly (chill aluminum container, fill it with crushed ice, add salt, add a little water), we then added one bottle of root beer which conveniently emptied exactly where the ICEE machines reservoir stopped. After 3-4 minutes of cranking the root beer turned into a thick ICEE like drink as advertised. My wife and I were impressed that it actually worked as advertised.
This machine works in a manner very similar to an ice cream maker. The ice and salt are used to super cool the drink solution of your choice. It's only a toy so don't count on it cranking out 32 ounce ICEE's on command, but for those hot days when your kids are bored it is something fun (and mildly educational) to do.
Customer Review: Wow -- A Low Cost Toy That Works!

My 10 year old daughter really enjoys this. Some notes:1. This is not a toy for unsupervised use. The ice/salt combination gets VERY cold; if it comes into contact with skin it will freeze to the skin (kind of like licking the flag pole, for those of you that remember the movie).
2. It takes some time to figure out how to put it together the first time, but is a breeze after that.
3. Quantities are small, but enough to satisfy a kid.
4. Hmmm....this could be used to make margaritas, too. :-) But, see note 3.
5. Cranking typically takes a few minutes longer than the instructions say -- but that's part of the group fun involved.
6. I gave this a "3" in educational, because this gives kids a little science lesson on how salted ice can be used to freeze water.
Mostly, I'm just amazed that a $... product actually does what it says it will do. If you think you'd enjoy using this with your kids, it's a great buy. If you aren't interested in using this with them, then avoid it.
