Toys and Games Reviews of Monopoly - The Lord of the Rings Trilogy Edition

Customer Review: Still a great game
Summary: 5 Stars

Monopoly is often overlooked as a gamenight option these days, many people considering it outdated. But it's a classic for a reason, combining lucky rolls and strategy in a very unique way.

The Lord of the Rings version is a fun alternate version of the game, adding a modern twist to the classic. Instead of the thimbles and hats you are the characters from LOTR. You play for power levels instead of cash, and you own regions of Middle Earth instead of properties. There is an alternate rule you can incorporate utilizing the "one ring" gamepiece, giving special power to whoever holds the ring. It's an interesting option, but for the most part you'll want to play by the original rules, all of which are still intact in this version.

The fact is that most people don't play Monopoly by the correct rules, and that makes all the difference. The key to enjoying the game is the inter-player deals and politics. That's where all the fun lies, and much of the strategy. Any player can strike any kind of a deal with another player - want to trade all the purples and light blues for Boardwalk? No problem. Want to trick someone into trading a property you need for all your railroads? This is where the real enjoyment comes from. I encourage you not only to get the game and play it, but to read the rules and "get into" the game.

There are also some fun alternate rules you can use, such as collecting $400 (instead of $200) when you *land* directly on "go", or putting fine money (from chance cards, utility expenses, get out of jail money, etc.) in the center of the board and collecting it when you land on "free parking".

Don't overlook Monopoly as an outdated option. It's still one of the best games out there.

Customer Review: I love Monopoly and LotR and this journey on Middle-Earth is indeed crazy
Summary: 5 Stars

I remember reading LotR and I loved the series and the Peter Jackson version. Once I heard of the Monopoly edition of LotR, I was excited. I soon won the LotR Monopoly edition. I came home, invited some relatives and soon had a great time!

As you know, Monopoly is a game inwhich you have to be the ultimate monopoly. You buy and sell property, and if you own Mt. Doom and Bara-dur (Boardwalk and Park Place in the original Monopoly) then you get a monopoly. You can build strongholds (houses) and fortresses (hotels) and everytime a rival lands on your property, then he has to give you power (money). If you can't pay the rent then you'll become bankrupt and you are out. You also have to avoid jail.

There is some new tokens that resemble characters from LotR. If you had a look at the screenshots of this Monopoly game then you'll notice a lot of changes. But there is a new optional rule you can play with in this version; everytime you roll an "Eye of Sauron" (also counts as one) the golden ring will move to one territory per eye, where you can add strongholds. If you land on a territory with the ring, you may get it for FREE! If you land on an owned territory with the ring on it, you have to pay double the rent.

So, if you are a 100% die-hard LotR that only enjoy the books, then you can miss. But if you are looking for a Monopoly board or for LotR stuff, I recommend this game then

Note: If Tolkien lived to see this, he would have died immediatly. Infact, I think he's rolling in his grave as I am typing this review.

Customer Review: The Monopoly Game to Rule them All?
Summary: 5 Stars

With the final movie currently out in theaters, the last flow of Lord of the Rings merchandise is hitting the toy shelves. Make sure The Lord of the Rings-themed Monopoly game is one item you buy. Whether you're a fan of the books, the movies, or Monopoly, this game more than pays for itself with fake money.
With many other themed Monopoly games, it seems as if not much heart was put into their creation. Lord of the Rings Monopoly, however, stands out as a truly remarkable game variation. The locations that the player is able to buy come strait from the book, and are in order of appearance in the books, going all the way from "Farmer Maggot's" to "Mount Doom." The money that is all too familiar from the original game has been replaced by units of power, and the game pieces are great--they seem to be based on original illustrations for the books, which is most apparent in the "Gandalf" piece (tall and thin, holding his staff like on the old book covers).
The "new way of playing" that has been added to the Lord of the Rings version of Monopoly adds a new strategy. Players rush to claim as much land before the One Ring travels to "Mount Doom" and the game ends. It also makes for a quicker game for those who don't have four or five hours of free-time.
Fans of any part of the Lord of the Rings phenomenon will enjoy ever aspect of this game--it truly feels like player an entirely new game. It's great and, without sounding too cliche, Lord of the Rings and Monopoly friends alike will want to play this game over and over again.

Customer Review: whoa
Summary: 5 Stars

I've already seen the Return of the King five times, the Two Towers eleven times, and the Fellowship of the Ring more times than I care to count. All things having to do with the movies or books are awesome, and this Monopoly is no exception.
Playing it is a really fun experience. You can play as:
Gimli, Galadriel, Frodo, Legolas, and, the best character of all, Aragorn. It even comes with a ring, with the Black Speech script on it, which you can use in the game for an optional rule.
Playing is funny too because all these random things happen, like Galadriel owning Helm's Deep, or Gimli being summoned to Mount Doom. The first time I played, I was Gandalf because my opponent insisted on being Aragorn, and so as the game progressed, Aragorn bought Gandalf's staff ("hey! you stole my staff!") and Gandalf bought Brego ("nya nya, got your horse") so it was kind of ridiculous. I mean, the former $75.00 luxury tax is now the Shelob's Lair tax. What's a spider going to do with money?
The Events and People cards are interesting. ("Fly, you fools!" Proceed to go), but strange sometimes: Having a pint at the Green Dragon gives you fifty dollars. Blow the Horn of Gondor and $45.00 drops out of the sky.
the funnest part, though, is reciting lines from the movie as you land on different locations.
the money, I forgot to mention, is now called, "Power"

adios
