Customer Review: Glad to know I'm not the only one Summary: 2 Stars
My 3 1/2 yr old recieved this for Christmas from her grandmother - I wasn't even aware of this doll since she's not that interested in dolls and doesn't watch commercials, so I let them throw out the box. The bottom line is, since I can't return it, I guess I'll put her in the closet (not the attic) for now, but my little girl's not getting her back until she's really ready. Not sure how it got set up, but it helped to read the directions for the 4 key phrases - my daughter enjoyed it when we got her to sing, but she kept reverting to asking to go potty and when my daughter didn't get her on the potty because she can't understand her, she would say she had an accident. I couldn't take all the yelling yes and no and the "Amanda's sad". I have a 3 1/2 yr old and a 10 month old - I don't need a 2 yr old too (otherwise I'd get a dog...). I gave her 2 stars because she might be good for an older child that really likes to play that way - but I don't even want my daughter to take the time to learn how to use her 'right' at this age. Anyway - she played with her for a couple of hours one day (with help), then she had to take her on our trip but since we made Amanda take a nap in the car (way too loud) she forgot all about her when we got there and I hid her under a blanket, we did get her out when we got back but she played with her shortly and then decided we could take Amanda's batteries out so she could play her new V-smile soccer game. Amanda's been sitting in the chair for over a week now (without batteries) and hasn't even been touched, so she's going up for when (if) my little girl asks for an interactive doll.
Customer Review: Not quite so Amazing Amanda Summary: 3 Stars
My daughter went nuts everytime she saw this doll on television. At 5 and a half I thought this would be an appropriate toy for her and the voice recognition wouldn't be a problem.
Amanda has four primary activities she performs:
Go potty.
Time to eat.
Time to sleep.
Let's play.
The command functionality seems simple enough but my daughter very much has a mind of her own and would rather say "Take a nap Amanda" or "Let's have lunch" which makes the interactive play a bit frustrating.
Playing with Amanda the first day was a treat. My daughter was surprised at everything Amanda could say, and how on her own she will just say "I love you mommy" and she understands what time it is when she wakes up. However after that first day my daughter's frustration grew not only over the very specific voice commands but the level of car Amanda needs!
I have to laugh each time I hear my daughter say "Can we just put her to sleep, she's driving me crazy!" This doll certainly teaches children about the importance of good parenting and the time and effort it takes to care for a little one. So I find it very amusing.
But in the 5 days we've had the doll, it has spent most of it's time either asleep or in my care. She doesn't want me to return it so I'm hoping that the more we play with it she'll get used to the voice commands and enjoy the doll. But for now my daughter is calling her "Annoying Amanda."
Customer Review: Aggravating Amanda... Summary: 1 Stars
I am outraged to have spent $100 for this kind of frustruation. When these commercials started airing, this doll looked to be marvelous. My daughter was desperate to have it. So we bought it for her birthday, noting the hefty price tag. But I thought surely this was a reasonable price if she does all the things she's supposed to according to the box. Boy was I mistaken. Nothing about this doll functions properly. The set up is worse than setting up my VCR. She says the same irritating things over and over "mommy say my name". So my daughter yells Amanda at her for the next 20 minutes and it seems she's not having a very good time. Amanda also keeps repeating "You're not my mommy" and "you look funny upside down mommy". What the...? She asks to "go potty" and then when you put her on it she doesn't recognize it. Then she gets pitiful and says "i had an accident, I'm sorry mommy". This breaks my daughter's heart as she got her to the potty immediately. The batteries are dead in a flash. My daughter was so frustrated with this doll that she hasn't offered to touch it since the first day (we've had it a month). Here are a few words to describe how we feel about Amazing Amanda... angry, frustrated, dissappointed, irritated, and ripped off. Make sure you keep your box and receipt for returning purposes. Your gonna need them.
Customer Review: Huge glitches - wait another year... Summary: 1 Stars
I just spent two frustrating hours with this doll and my daughter and we're taking "Amazing" Amanda back to the store tomorrow. The setup process is long and tedious and my daughter is so frustrated right now. You have to speak to the doll over and over again and she still had trouble recognizing my daughter's voice. One of the problems is that the child has to wait until Amanda is finished speaking, and many young children probably will have a problem doing that. In addition, the room has to be quiet with no one else speaking for Amanda to recognize the voice commands (which is highly unlikely in a household with kids!!). Also - I put new batteries into the doll in the morning and by the evening, Amanda was saying "Mommy my batteries are running low"! 3 C batteries in one day! If you buy this doll, you are going to need rechargeables.
I think this doll is just not ready yet - it is a great idea but too many glitches right now. My daughter is four and maybe that's too young for Amazing Amanda but we followed the instructions and still the doll did not recognize her voice. When Amanda doesn't recognize you, it says, "You don't sound like my Mommy." which frustrated my daughter further! I'd wait on this for now until they work out the technological issues. Could be fun... if it worked.
