We ALL love it! I found this at a thrift store, thought I'd take a chance. My grandkids and their cousins, aged 18 months to 6 years, quickly learned to make it work and to share it instead of fighting over it. Even the adults, parents and grandparents, find this toy entertaining. Kids don't have an idea that they are learning -- but this sturdy, colorful magnet/gears toy is fun on so many different levels. Another plus: the portable magnetic board is good with magnetic alphabets and other magnetic toys. I went back to the thrift store to purchase the other two on the shelf -- alas, they were already gone. Buy this toy, and the only regret you may have is not being able to get your kid to do anything else!

This fascinating mechanical marvel is toy engineering at its finest. Kids will be fascinated with 11 brightly colored turning, rotating, goofy gears. Turn it on and add the first gear to the magnetic surface. Continue adding gears and watch as they flip, turn, and almost mesmerize. Control the speed wit the fast or slow button. Requires 1 AA battery (not included).

With its ingenious design, the Gearation Activity Set lets preschoolers assemble clicking, whirring, googly-eyed machines all by themselves. Eleven colorful plastic gears adhere magnetically to a 14-by-16-inch easel, so kids are free to arrange them in any order they can dream up. The gear in the center powers the whole contraption. The various gears (each measuring from 1 to 3 inches across) all do something different, whether it's making a noise or just turning a brightly colored arm, and kids can control the gear speeds with fat, easy-to-grab switches. And since all the parts are cleverly connected by magnets, you don't have to worry about the motor burning out. --Paul Hughes
