Toys and Games Reviews of Tiny Love Gymini - Black, White and RedCustomer Review: An essential baby item Summary: 4 Stars
We had a more colorful version of this for my older child, and got this one 7 years later for our son. He is four months old and has really enjoyed it since he was just a couple of months old.
The gym comes with three toys -- a rattle, a music box, and a mirrored rattle. You can also easily hang other toys and rattles from it. The mat is washable, and the whole thing folds flat for storage.
My son finds the music soothing, although honestly I find it a little annoying after a while. Also, the batteries are not changeable, so once they're dead you have to either toss the music box or get another one. When the batteries are dying, the music sounds like a record played at the wrong speed (I found this out with the first one -- the batteries are still going strong on this one).
We can easily leave our baby playing in this while we cook, take a shower or what have you. We've added on different toys for different developmental stages and even put his baby seat under it so he can sit up and play. He was a little overstimulated by it when he was brand new, but quickly took to it, even before he could effectively reach for the toys.
Customer Review: Essential and adaptable Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this for my son when he was about 2 months old. I wish I had bought it sooner. He loved it immediately. This was the first item that I could put him down on and be able to do something for myself (such as go to the bathroom!) that would keep him occupied enough not to miss me. I agree that I was a bit disapointed that it only came with 3 toys, but there are so many other benefits that overcome that and with a little creativity it's not a hinderance. For instance tummy time was much more interesting when he had black and white images under him to hold his head up and look at. He's now 4 months old and still loves it. It's easy to wash and store. Now that he's into color I simply hang other items such as colorful rattles from sassy links. Sassy links are great to hang just about any toy from (on this gymini or anything else). They also help with being able to lower the toys to the appropriate height for the child to reach. Children do change fast and so will their interest in certain toys. I'm sure this toy will only be good until he starts trying to pull himself up but if I had it to do over again I would buy it in a heartbeat.
Customer Review: great for many months of fun Summary: 5 Stars
This toy is designed for very young infants, and our daughter, who started using it around 2 months, loved it. She was entranced by the dangly toys and over time learned to reach up and grab them. Later, when she was at a stage when she wanted to put everything in her mouth, we added rings so she could pull the toys closer to her face. We loved the fact that it was easily folded and snapped shut and that it was easily washed; the colors stayed bright for us, unlike for another reviewer. And it didn't come with annoying electronic stimuli.
Our daughter is now 9 months old and still likes it. She sits up and especially likes pulling on the springy poles that hold it together. Once she got used to being on her stomach she became very interested in the pattern on the quilt; until then, the lively circus theme was completely wasted on her since she was on her back.
We got this for free at a "swap shop," and it came with some dangly toys that were probably not part of the original set. I don't know that it's worth $40 (I mean, it's pretty much a piece of cloth with tent poles and holes), but it is a great toy.
Customer Review: Expensive & overrated activity mat Summary: 2 Stars
After reading raving reviews about this gym, I decided that it was probably a good item, despite the high price for such an unsophisticated item. After getting it home, I was disappointed that it only came with three toys (add-ons are pricey) and that there was no practical way to adjust how low they hung for baby- they were either in his face or too high to see. I introduced my newborn to this activity gym repeatedly from birth to three months, hoping to entertain him with it at some point. At first, he was too little to see the arches and the toys. Then, he quickly became too active to just lay passively because he wanted to lean on the arches for support in standing. I think this mat would be far more entertaining if it had more toys and put them on an elastic or adjustible string. I also think if the mat had different textures and a more engaging musical toy, it might be more appealing to babies. I've seen other activity gyms that have those features, and wish I would've bought one of those instead of falling for the hype that newborns are attracted to black, white, and red as one of my main reasons for buying this gym.
Customer Review: My son's favorite toy Summary: 4 Stars
Tiny Love has this activity gym all right...the red, black and white colors on the playmat draw a young infant's attention. We decided against the activity gyms with flashing lights and music. They are just too much plus some were quite a bit more money.
The baby just loves making the toys rattle. We added a few other hanging toys with different rattles to make the gym more interesting. There are holes on both arches for extra toys. Our son loves kicking a rattle while laying on his back and hitting other toys with his arms. It is totally hysterical to watch him swinging both arms and legs at high speed...he is sooo excited and happy with himself for making all these noises.
Besides this toy, a mobile and the bouncy chair, there aren't too many developmental or other kinds of toys for young infants to play with for the first few months of life. Yes, once they roll around and crawl, babies are too big for this mat but it is a great toy for several months and well worth the price. But I would definitely buy some other hanging, rattling toys (infantino has some).
