Toys and Games Reviews of ThinkFun Shape By ShapeCustomer Review: like tangrams but better Summary: 5 Stars
I can't get enough of the fun games from Thinkfun. We've yet to buy a dud. Shape by shape is a 2-dimensional puzzle game, similar to tangrams. Some pieces are red, some are yellow and you make a design to match one from a deck of picture cards. It's a red design against a yellow background. The shapes repeat themselves so while there are 14 pieces there are only 7 different shapes. That helps the player see patterns in solving each puzzle. At first, players might need the picture clues on the back of each card. Two clues are given; first the layout of JUST the red tiles are given. Hopefully once those are in place the player can figure out how to place the yellow. But if not, the second picture clue gives the layout of the yellow tiles. When my middle child, then age 7 first played, she strictly just followed the clues, trying to match the tiles to the pictures. Not so challenging to an adult perhaps but perfect for her at that time. After playing a while though you'll start to get the hang of the game, be able to tell right away if two pieces can't possibly go next to each other, and so on.
My only gripe about this game is it's storage design. The cards store inside the game frame; a good idea but "played with" cards tend to "fluff up" a bit and tend to make the sliding drawer get stuck.
Customer Review: Great fun for all ages Summary: 5 Stars
My daughter received this game for her 4th birthday, about 6 months ago. When she got it, none of us could do the game without the looking at the back of the cards (the answers). She still enjoyed playing a bunch, though, because she could still see what she made by following the directions. She decided to practice the Kitty picture over and over again while her dad and I tried different pictures. Slowly, we've been able to "see" the shapes in the pictures to work on some puzzles without the answers.
The best part of this game, though, is how little kids can surprise older adults. My dad was in town and my daughter asked to play with him. She gave him the Kitty picture to do and played something else nearby while he worked. And worked. He's a mechanical engineer so this was right up his alley. After a few minutes, my daughter came back over and asked for a turn. He graciously gave her the board. She filled in the whole thing by memory. His face was priceless!!!
It's truly a good game for all ages! It stores well, too: the cards fit in a drawer in the board, and the board and shapes go in a handy bag.
Customer Review: Great for our whole family! Summary: 5 Stars
This is a GREAT puzzle game for all ages. My 4 year old spends HOURS at a time doing this, it's his absolute favorite game, and I find that it's still challenging enough to stump me! It can be a fun party game too! Our friends and family love to do timed puzzle solving challenges, I've never seen them so excited over a game before!
There are enough different puzzle cards so that you don't get bored doing the same things over and over, and by the time you get through all of them you've probably forgotten how to do the first ones again!
The only thing that isn't perfect about this is that we've noticed the cards tend to get stuck in the drawer under the playing board, and then they get bent, and then they get stuck the next time because they've been bent. It's definitely not a big issue though, we just keep a rubber band around the cards and keep them out of the drawer instead, and they can still fit in the travel bag with the board.
Customer Review: A classic and a must have Summary: 5 Stars
This is a great game for all ages. My 4 year old loves it, 6 year old loves it, me and hubby love it, teenage neighbor loves it, my parents in their 70's love it.
It is also great for a take along game-I wouldn't suggest playing it in the car, but it comes with a handy drawstring bag and the cards fit in a drawer underneath the main playing 'table'.
Our family and friends have had hours of fun playing with this puzzle.
As a homeschooler-I look for fun ways to bring learning into our home and this puzzle fits the bill perfectly! This game helps my boys to: identify shapes, to develop their spatial memory, spatial relationship & spatial visualization skills, to recognize and apply transformations, and problem solving skills. They think they are just having fun!
This product is worth every penny-a classic and a must have for every home.
Customer Review: Simple and fun, as a good child's toy should be Summary: 5 Stars
My 6 year old son just received this toy for the holidays. Both my wife and I played it with him last night, and we all enjoyed it. It's durable and well-engineered to fit compactly together. The puzzles are a nice degree of difficulty for a 6 year old, not to mention fun and challenging for adults. This is because the number of pieces is just right, not too many or too few, and the use of two primary colors to define a red figure inside a yellow background gives enough visual information to solve the puzzles with just a little persistence.
This was fun to play together my son, but I suspect it will also keep him busy on car trips or other times when he wants to figure out the puzzles himself.
