My little 4.5 year old paleontologist daughter loved this kit! At home we're learning about archaeology and fossils and this was the hands-on activity I chose to learn about fossils. For under $15 (you can find this under $10 if you search), this is a 5-star!
It comes in a little tube with the durable sand fossil block, two wooden tools (chisel and hammer), a brush, magnifying glass, the fossil block with 4 fossils inside, and the paper guide to learn more about your fossils. Quality of the tools is to be expected for such a low price, but the brush was very small so we used our own, bushier brush.
Plan to spend 1-2 hours with your block, a brick of hard sand that you really have to chisel off. We had our own pick to hasten the time a bit and thus also used our own googles to protect her eyes from flying sand. The fossils are a brown color and really stand out against the very light sand, so don't worry about not seeing them. My daughter squealed with excitement as each fossil was uncovered. She easily identified them with the accompanying guide. It was a great lesson for her to learn that not all fossils are dinosaurs! :) It would have been cool if they also managed to include some kind of plant fossil, but hey, we loved this kit!
Our four small fossils will be treasured forever. After the first fossil was uncovered (an ammonite shell, smaller than expected), she proclaimed she wanted to become a paleontologist, which I proudly caught on video.
