Toys and Games Reviews of Cat in the Hat I Can Do That! GameCustomer Review: Great family fun!! Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this game for my 2 and 4 y/o kids (and a few extra for upcoming birthdays). I can't begin to mention how wonderful it is. First, a game like this offers quality family time. Second, it teaches turn-taking, rules, and accomplishment.
To play, pick one of each color card - it tells you 1) what to do 2) with ______ item 3) in location. (Jump 2 times/ with the cake/ on your head). The cards are very easy to "read" - each shows you what to do. The pieces are made out of foam - easy to hold and balance, and no damage if it falls.
I love the rule setup: If you don't think you can complete a task, you are allowed to pick again until you find one that you can. However, the game also emphasizes that you can change the rules to suit your needs. In my case (since my child is 2), I find it easier to play 2 rounds per person. My children are very proud every time they get to complete a task.
My only complaint is that it was significantly cheaper to buy straight from Amazon than 3rd party. Otherwise, it is a wonderful game for all ages.
Customer Review: Excellent Teaching Game...and it's fun for everyone!!! Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this for my son and I thought it was too good to be true! My son is 4 and has autism. This game is wonderful for any child (my typical 2 year old can do it and LOVES it!) but it is the perfect game for teaching a child with autism to follow directions. We started out just having him do one thing at a time, quickly moved to using 2 cards, and are now on using 3. It has been such a wonderful addition to our therapies that we do with him and he has so much fun playing it. My only complaint is that my two year old easily ripped the foam thing-a-ma-stick (I think that's what it's called) but the toy is recommend for 4 and up anyway. If you are considering this game for your typical child or your child with special needs I would say go for it. I mentioned the game to both his speech therapist and occupational therapist and they have both gone out and bought it to use with kids they see for therapy with rave reviews. A++++
Customer Review: Has potential, but poorly made Summary: 3 Stars
I was very excited about this game because I have a 3 year old who is very active and loves to move around. She also loves the Cat in the Hat. There is, however, a piece of this game called the "Trick-a-ma-stick" and it is constructed so poorly that it puts a damper on the game every time we play it! This stick is made of foam and is supposed to be able to support children climbing around, over and under it. It will barely stand on its own, let alone with the added exertion of a child. I have gotten to the point where I have removed the "Trick-a-ma-stick" cards, but this takes away quite a few action cards. My daughter never wants to play this game and I believe it is because we spend so much time trying to make this piece of the game work. This game does have a great idea and concept. It gets children moving and extends their physical vocabulary. It's just frustrating when things don't work as they are intended to.
Customer Review: kids like it, painful for adults Summary: 3 Stars
We purchased this game for our 4 year old son. He enjoys it and if you had multiple kids who could play together it would be an enjoyable game. In our family our son is the oldest child and we have to play his games with him. This game is painful for adults to play. There is a lot of physical activity involved, usually by the time I sit down to play a game with my son it is because I want him to settle a bit, this game isn't for that. The other thing I find is that my son can barely make it through before he just wants to play with the "trick a ma stick" ( a foam tubing limbo type bar) and he is crawling under and jumping on top of the thing to destroy it. Lastly, a lot of the props are these flat foam things (book, fan, dress etc) and there is nothing different about them which doesn't make it very exciting. After about three plays of this game you have used it to its potential.
Customer Review: Giggles galore, BUT... Summary: 3 Stars
Our 5 yr old son received this as a gift for Christmas and we've had a lot of fun playing it a handfull of times. It does a very good job of teaching/helping to reinforce the concepts of over, under, around, & on top. I would've given it 4 stars...however, I suspect it will get old pretty fast if we don't (like other reviewers) make some of our own cards to go with it, AND I was disappointed in how flimsy the parts were (especially the "trick-a-ma-stick" which is constantly leaning to one side). IF (like us) you're able to get it for less than $15, though...it's definitely worth price. Personally, I like that the game takes less than 20 minutes to play, & I suspect that was intentional; most kids that will enjoy this game just don't have the attention spans required for much more, plus it takes away most parents' time constraint excuses not to play it with their kids. =)
