Toys and Games Reviews of The Elf on the Shelf: A Christmas Tradition with Blue Eyed North Pole Pixie-ElfCustomer Review: Elfie is part of the family! Summary: 5 Stars
We adopted our elf 2 years ago (we are on year 3) and he has become part of the family! My girls, even as they get older, love waking up to find where Elfie (their name for him) has landed. Of course, they didn't understand how his brothers could breathe in their boxes, but I explained that they are supplied with plenty of air before they are packaged, and they have to be packaged b/c that's how they get adopted :0] All of our friends - kids and kids at heart- also love Elfie and protect him with so much love and care. The book says that you're not allowed to touch him, but one of the little boys did and the little girls defended Elfie to the hilt! My girls are now allowed to touch him, because they want to give him a gentle kiss and tell him how much they love him! It's a wonderful tradition! And yes, you can find another elf to use - but make sure it's small enough for it to find creative places to land each morning when returning from the North Pole! And... we found that Barnes & Nobles carries the elves for a slightly lower price!! I don't regret the price spent at all - it's so worth the years of joy!
Customer Review: Creepy as all get out. Summary: 1 Stars
I work in a store that sells 'Elf on the Shelf'.
There is an accompanying video, which has a song:
"Elf on the Shelf is watching you,
what you say and what you do.
Elf on the Shelf is judging you,
each and every Christmas."
Talk about accustoming a child to a moralistic police state! The video is filled with testimonials by children and adults, all of which sound just as canned and paid-off as the majority of those on Amazon.
Who would do this to their child? Only someone with severe control issues, who wishes their children to remain in a state of constant, paranoid pliancy. Big brother for the kiddos.
Do the little ones a favor, and treat them like full human beings with the capacity to learn a balanced approach to right and wrong through trial and error. Not like pets that need to disciplined through fear. They'll grow up to be better people.
(Not to mention, if you have to do this to someone-- I'm assuming you're a sadistic jerk-- then at least spring for a nicer looking elf, and not a cheap piece of plastic like this one).
Customer Review: We love the fun of "Elf on the Shelf" Summary: 5 Stars
We named our Elf, "Johnny". Johnny comes the day after Thanksgiving and the kids are so excited. But...they are not allowed to touch Johnny, so we have since found a small neighborhood store that sells elfs. These are the ones that they are allowed to touch, cuddle and sleep with. So, the day after Thanksgiving, my two children make a bed (out of a shoe box or a suitcase), waiting for thier elves and Johnny to appear. Sure enough, the next morning, Johnny and their elves show up. However, in our house, Johnny is a prankster. He has TP'd thier rooms, put their undies in the freezer, wrapped the TV with Christmas paper, etc. It has all been in good fun. And as others have said, every night he finds a new place to hide. The kids love it. And, on Christmas Eve, Johnny and the other elves leave with Santa until next year. Yes, it is tiring to come up with something different every nite, but to see your children enjoying the "make-believe" (even though I know my 12 year old is going along with it)...is PRICELESS.
Customer Review: A Beloved Family Tradition! Summary: 5 Stars
We received our Elf on the Shelf last December, and he was an instant hit with my 3 little ones (2-6-8). They enjoyed deciding together on a name for him and then raced each morning to see where he was freshly positioned among the house. Always in a clever, funny & overall cute pose....he is fun & easy to help harness your child's imagination. Just don't forget to move him before you go to bed.....!!
The book is lovely and a nice read. I like the 70's, vintage illustrations and overall appeal. Reminds me of my childhood, I suppose. We are looking forward to our 2nd year with "Nuddy" our Elf...he will be reappearing in our home really soon! Although he is a well-contructed doll, I am happy that one of the 'rules' is that the children cannot touch him, or he loses his magic. That has been a blessing, as my children would toss him around if they could, then the dog would find him and he'd be a goner. So, thankgoodness for the sweet, endearing & protective rules the authors thought of.
Customer Review: Add a little magic to your christmas Summary: 5 Stars
Had several friends tell my wife and I we had to get this and how greeat it was, so we ordered it. When we first got it, we thought our 5 year old would be too old for the whole concept, but we decided we could sell the idea well enough.
First morning we put "Ned", as he would later be named, on top of a curtain rod, and we laid the book on the kitchen floor. When my daughter saw the book she was super excited, and as we read it, she jumped up and ran around the house looking for the elf.
The first thing she did every morning was find "Ned". She would talk to Ned and was fascinated that he moved all over the house. Christmas morning game and Ned was gone, she was very sad, but is already talking about seeing Ned next year. My wife and I are glad we did this and would recommend to anyone with small children.
Ned is a Toy and looks like a Toy, so too much older than 5 and it may begin to lose its luster.
