Toys and Games Reviews of The Elf on the Shelf: A Christmas Tradition with Blue Eyed North Pole Pixie-ElfCustomer Review: 5 yr old not fooled or impressed Summary: 1 Stars
We bought this for a new family tradition to start this year with our 5 yr old DD.And read the book to her and then let the elf appear the following morning. She didn't see the box or anything associated with it being a 'toy'.We thought this would be a lot of fun and a way to get her to make sure she was making the right choices at home.
We placed him on the fireplace on her stocking holder and it took her 2 nights to find him.Once she did we played like we didn't know what she was talking about. She kept telling us that she wanted to play with the toy elf on her stocking holder. We told her we didn't know what toy she was talking about. So we read the story again and I pointed out that he needed a name and maybe then we could see him too.She went through names and then didn't want to name the toy because that was silly. She wanted to take him down to sleep with him.I read the rules from the book over again to her and she still wasn't taking it seriously. She kept telling us that he was just a little toy elf and that she knew he wasn't real.
So much for having fun with this tradition.I hope tomorrow we can convince her that he is going back to report to Santa but I think that I wasted 30.00 on this dust collector.
Customer Review: A great tradition Summary: 5 Stars
I enjoyed this idea so much that I sent one to my friend, who is a teacher and in a few years, sure to be a grandma. My boys are 8 and 11 and I wish I would have learned about it earlier in their lives. My 8 year old totally bought into the idea! Every year, we focus on "Holidays Around the World" so they know where certain customs come from. Even though this does not have any educational value, my son popped out of bed on time everyday to find his new friend. I look forward to using this in my classroom, once I can no longer use it at home (which is coming sooner than I would like) and passing it on to my grandchildren one day. I think this is the perfect family gift for little ones.
I did have to laugh when I remembered the reviews of parents who commented having to get out of bed to change the location of the elf. At least 4 times I had to send my son up to his room for his "slippers" so I could quickly change the elf in the morning, which I forgot to do the night before. That in itself will give stories to tell.
The only con is that I wish it would stay in place when you bend it. It has a tendency to fall from where you put it because it does not stay in its bended position.
Customer Review: Very cute and clever, but my daughter was TERRIFIED of the elf! Summary: 5 Stars
I have a five-year-old daughter and thought this would be a great tradition to start in our home. Last night we read the book for the first time, and the elf magically "appeared" this morning. Bad idea. Apparently I should have let her see the elf in the box first because when she came down stairs and saw him sitting on top of the TV, she let out an ear-piercing scream and literally jumped a foot off the ground and wrapped herself around me. I didn't want to pick the elf up and show it to her because according to the book, if you touch him, it will take away his magical powers. And in the event that she calmed down, I didn't want her to think the elf wasn't magical anymore. So, while she was cowering in her bedroom, the elf was "shooed away with a stick". Needless to say, I was late to work this morning, and I'm waiting to get a call from preschool asking me why my daughter is talking about an elf in our living room that is alive that got spanked with a stick.
It's a very cute and clever idea, I just wish I would have introduced the elf prior to him making his grand entrance. The elf is going to write her a letter today and hopefully smooth things over. Wish me luck!
Customer Review: Every family needs an elf of their own Summary: 5 Stars
A friend turned me onto The Elf on the Shelf: A Christmas Tradition with Blue Eyed North Pole Pixie-Elf and the magic it can help bring to the Christmas season. We live in Shanghai, China where we don't necessarily see Santa so we have to do what ever we can to help create the magic. I'll admit that I baulked at the price for this gift set and when it arrived, I still wasn't impressed. It wasn't until we read the story, named our elf, then the daily magic set in that I began to realize that this is a tradition that was just beginning in our family. Our 5 year old daughter would sit and talk to our elf, tell him all her Christmas desires, and even left a note for Santa that he hand delivered. This is a fun way to bring the magic of Christmas into your home on a daily basis - just be forewarned that it's up to the parents to help keep the elf on the move! We were all sad when our elf made his last trip to the North Pole but we'll be excited to see him again next year! Needless to say, this gift set was worth it's weight in gold.
Customer Review: Not creepy if YOU promote it right Summary: 5 Stars
I think the idea behind the Elf is wonderful. My daughter is 18 months and when she wakes up I say "Where is your elf?" and she goes looking and points to it. The book says you can't touch them because they will lose their magic. My daughter hasn't wanted to hold it or anything, because she never has. I think the plush version will confuse kids if you have both, being able to hold one and not the other. I don't tell her the elf is watching her when she is bad, and I won't ever tell her that even when she is older. I think this is perfect as a family tradition if the parents don't use it to control their children.
The Elf itself is made from cloth and the face is plastic (I thought it was porcelain or something and was scared of it falling) so if a cat knocks it down overnight it's no big deal. The book is very long, and I don't think we're going to include it as part our tradition. I'm just going to tell her my own version every Christmas and hopefully that will make it a little more our own. The entire thing comes in a very nice box, and the book is hard cover and nice so I believe it is worth the money.
