My child is four and I bought this for her because she said she wants to be an engineer.
The toy is of very high quality. I agree with all the other reviews that the wood is of excellent quality and very strong hardwood. The marbles have dropped on our hard linoleum floors and not chipped. The bag is a simple drawstring bag and fits the set perfectly, which is great since we're out of space in our little toy storage unit.
There is no recommended age, except that since the marbles are small, it is not recommended for children three and under, but at four I think most children will find it a real challenge. Save a few exceptional kids with real engineering talent, you will probably have to help your pre-school aged child build satisfying structures for awhile until they get the hang of it.
But if you are anything like me, you will have a lot of fun doing that.
Any school-aged child who has played with blocks should be able to pick it up quickly.
