Toys and Games Reviews of Techno Source Rubik's RevolutionCustomer Review: Save your money Summary: 2 Stars
I was thrilled to receive this as a present this past Christmas. This quickly faded as I realized what a stupid little toy this really was. I'm really disappointed that they would put the name 'Rubik' on this product, and make it look like the original Rubik's Cube just to get people like me to buy it only to find out what it's really like. Shady marketing!
I don't like this primarily because there is no puzzle to this cube, nothing to keep you going back and back until you figure it out, like it was with the original Rubik's cube, or other Rubik's products. The games it does have keep your fingers moving fast, but as an adult, I lose interest very quickly.
It's also very loud, and you can't adjust the volume. The voice uttered from the cube is muffled and annoying.
There are six games you can play, but you need to keep the instruction paper handy to remember how you are supposed to play them.
Some of the games are rather badly designed too, here's an example: One of the games is "Rapid Recharge", where you gradually have to recharge all the lights by rapidly pressing each button as fast as you can. Once you have one light recharged another light comes available and you continue on. Unfortunately you can totally cheat the device because you can get six of your fingers into the holes and just press over and over quickly finishing the game.
If you have young kids, they will probably get a kick out of this game, it mimics other systems like 'Simon' and 'Bop It', but as for me, I think it's probably going to be resold, or just added to my junk drawer never to be played again. I'd save your money for something else.
Customer Review: Nothing like the original, but fun Summary: 5 Stars
Most of the people complaining about the Revolution are those who thought it would be an actual electronic Rubik's Cube that you could scramble and race to solve. If you actually did some minimal research before racing to the toy store, you would learn that it's not an actual Rubik's Cube, but an electronic game similar to Simon and Bop It. There are 6 games. In Light Speed, one of the 6 buttons on the Cube will light up and you need to push it as fast as you can. In Rapid Recharge, you need to "charge" the 6 sides by rapidly pushing the buttons. Pattern Panic is exactly like Simon. You have to memorize a pattern the Cube gives you and repeat it as it gets more and more intricate. Cube Catcher is like Light Speed except multiple lights will be lit and you need to hit at least 70% in 30 second intervals. Multiplayer Madness is essentially Light Speed for up to 6 people. You push the lit button and pass the Cube onto the next player. Code Cracker is just a logic game where you have to guess the code by trial and error.
Being a fan of the original Rubik's Cube, I can sincerely say I've enjoyed the time I've had with my Rubik's Revolution. The games are a bit simplistic, but challenging and you do learn different strategies and patterns to get better scores and times. My only complaint is about the stickers, which can peel off with extended use of the Cube. Thankfully, you can order free replacement stickers at [...]
Customer Review: Designed as a Fraud Summary: 1 Stars
I bought this at a store, expecting it to be some silly, flashy electronic whiz-bang *added* to a traditional Rubik's cube game. There was nothing on the box to suggest that there is *nothing but* the flashy electronic game here.
I got it for my own birthday, and had the anticipation there in the back of my mind for some 2 months until the date arrived when I would open it. As you might expect, this enhanced my disappointment considerably.
The design of this toy screams out "Rubik's Cube", and was clearly intended to generate some extra revenue by tricking R.C. fans into buying it. Which is really too bad, as from the positive reviews here, it may be an enjoyable toy in its own right for some people (particularly those around age 10 and under).
For my part, I will be boycotting the Rubik's brand name from now on.
I would also note that it's not just the loudness of the synthetic voice that is irritating -- it's the low sampling rate of the digitization, which gives rise to a screechy, noisy quality, the type you find in the lowest-quality electronic toys out there. When I tried out one of the games, pressing the buttons to avoid the "Warning, warning..." voice was more an exercise in pain avoidance than anything else.
The original $20 price tag for this thing is probably about 5 times too high, considering what you get for it.
Customer Review: most irritating toy Summary: 1 Stars
My mom bought one of these for $40 (from Macy's) for her grandkids, my kids. They started using it, at the default loudest volume (which there is no intuitive way to reduce) the sounds it frequently makes during game play are quite irritating (and loud). For that reason alone, I would not want my kids to have one of these (we are going to return it to the store). If there was a way to permanently set it to the lowest volume, then it wouldn't be so irritating, but from what I can tell there is no way to do this - each time you turn it on, you would have to go through this non-intuitive procedure to reduce the volume, and I guarantee you my kids wouldn't do that unless I yelled at them multiple times asking them to (which is about as irritating as the toy itself). It looks like the original Rubik's cube, so of course someone like myself who is familiar with the original is going to expect this new Revolution toy to function in a similar manner - I spent almost 5 minutes twisting and turning it (almost to the point of breaking it) to try to get the pieces to turn like the original toy. For $40, I don't think it was unreasonable to expect it to be an electronically-enhanced version of the original Rubik's cube, which it certainly is not. What a stupid and irritating toy!
Customer Review: problems begin 30 min after opening package Summary: 2 Stars
so i received this as a gift from my wife because I expressed an interest in rubiks cubes due in part from the Will Smith movie. btw since this is her account that I am writing the review on, I really love it baby girl ..so anyways, she will agree, after opening it and giving it a chance and playing with it off and on for about 20 something minutes, the sound became increasingly distorted and then all of the electronics shut down... ok so perhaps the batteries were exhausted from their tremendous voyage from WingSong chinese rubiks revolution cube plant, so we exchanged the batteries for new ones and presto, the thing works again.. for about 20 more minutes and then the same effect. Not sure if there is a commonality between all rubiks revolution cubes because from the look of preceeding reviews, my fake rubics cube might have seen alot more play then others as they seem to be thrown away, smashed, regifted, etc... very quickly. On the contrary, it is quite possible that Mr. Immitation Rubics Cube inspector was sleeping during final testing of my revolution puzzle cube, but regardless, it does have some functional issues so please be aware of the possibility that your artificial rubiks cube might also have the same condition. -j shanahan
