There aren't really 48 slots. Some cars are thin enough to fit two in one slot. That means that with one car in them, they knock around and with two cars in them they knock into each other. At that point, what's better about this than a shoe box?
At least in a shoe box, you can tell which car is which. In this you can only see the front or back tip, whichever end you choose to stick out of the top of each slot.
They have the old tire shaped case for twice this price, but I prefer it.
This case looks like it's about the same size as the old cases with two trays inside. Those were way better than this is, though.

I purchased this case as additional storage for my son's 100+ cars. We had already filled a 72 car case and I was looking for something that closed well and would hold the larger-sized cars and trucks. This case has been perfect so far. It holds more than the stated 48, as the slots are so roomy that you can double-up the cars. There are also 3 very large cut-outs that can hold 8-9 standard cars in each (I use them to hold the motorized cars). The case closes tightly (but still easy enough for my toddler to open), and it holds the really long cars with no issues. It's a great deal and a must-have for your little car enthusiast!Customer Review: Good car case

Bought as a gift for my grandson. It holds a lot of cars which can make it heavy, but it serves its purpose of keeping all those cars in one place, easy to find when one wants to play cars. He is continuing to collect more cars. I think he will need another. I would buy another of the same case. They are very easy to use and the style inside is good for keeping cars in order. The price is excellent. I could not find this model in the stores. I read that another model of case had a problem with latch and hinges. Not this one. Our three-year-old has acquired MANY cars, and we have hunted high and low for cases to accommodate them. The best case is still the old vinyl one that my husband had as a kid, but this plastic one has been a great addition. We have two of these, and they hold all shapes and sizes (the only exception we found is one of the flatbed towtrucks). I doubt these will last as long as the vinyl case has, but for the money, they have been great! I bought 2 of these so my son wouldn't leave cars all around the house where I could (and usually did) find them at 2 AM by stepping on them. One case was fine, but the other had a bent lid that didn't latch. I did some low-tech bending of the plastic lip so that the latch would catch the wedge on the side of the case, which seems to help, but I wouldn't rely on it not coming open while going upstairs. The easy solution was to teach my boy to carry the case horizontally. Still, they work and hold most cars in a neat and orderly fashion.
