No, I did not purchase this product for a child. I did, however, purchase it to protect my OWN collection of Hot Wheels vehicles. Being an adult, my standards for the storage of collectible miniatures is probably a bit higher than, say, the standards of your average eight-year-old.
The container is made of durable hard plastic, and the "door" that swings open to reveal the 48 storage compartments is connected by reliable plastic "hinges." DO NOT stand up the container and open it unless you enjoy watching your collectibles ride out on their little wheels and hit the floor. It's best to lay the product flat and open it like a book. In all honesty, this product is not the ideal storage solution for even a semi-serious collector, but it IS durable, significantly more affordable, and provides quick access to all of your Hot Wheels.
The product is only educational in the sense that the collector may be learning to recognize car models and memorize information, and it's only fun if you enjoy admiring your collection every now and then. Therefore, I concluded that the product is neither educatinal nor fun in and of itself. But... why should it be? It's good storage for someone that doesn't want to spend more for less compartments, and it's a vast improvement over my old Hot Wheels storage system: ziplock bags. So... if you're like me and never really grew up; this is pretty darn great for the price. If you're buying this for a kid, I'd recommend showing the recipient how to lay the container flat (on the floor or a table) before adding or removing cars.

I bought this (the blue version) some years ago at a store and i can tell it is unbreakable for a kid. My 2-year-old son use it push it and stand over it and nothing... still working.
My son now is 4-year-old and still uses it as a reliable toy.
That's why i bought another one (this black version) through amazon, well, then, and because his Hot Wheels is getting bigger and bigger... if you want just to keep them and show them i suggest you to buy this Hot Wheels Over the Door Display Case but if the kid loves races he will need to transport a lot of cars from his room to the track always built in my living room
Also i read reviews about the other 100 car case Hot Wheels Rollin' 100 Car Case with Launcher (Colors May Vary) and didn't like what i read. It has wheels but i prefer a durable case.
This is also a good way to teach him to keep all of his cars in a safe place.

I've actually ordered this product 4 times... the first 2 times I received exactly what I expected: a car case that has 44 small slots and 1 larger slot(monster truck size). It was absolutely perfect for all my boys hot wheels. The last two times I ordered it I received what looked like the same case (same cover and everything) but this time it only had 15 large slots. I assumed the manufacturer mixed up some lids for their cases since they do sell the monster truck case as well, so I sent it back and ordered another. I got the same case again with the 48 car case cover, but slots for monster trucks. This time I called amazon to see what the deal was..they told me "cases may vary" and that they couldn't guarantee I'd get what I expected. I sent that one back and just went to ToysRus where I got what I needed (with slots for 48 cars). If you have a lot of those monster trucks, this case is perfect..otherwise you'll be shoving 4-5 cars into each slot. Buyer Beware.Customer Review: Great toy but beware of clasp

I ordered 2 cases (one for my son and another for his friend). One of the cases arrived with a broken clasp and the other looked as if it was about to break. I returned them and was given a full refund by Amazon. I still wanted the cases but didn't want to take the chance of getting another broken one so I went to a toy store to purchase them. Fortunately, they had about 11 of the same cases to choose from. I wanted to double check the clasps before I bought them and found that I had to go through all 11 cases just to find 2 that closed securely and tightly. The other cases closed but not very tightly and certainly not well enough that I thought they would last for very long with repeated use by my 3 y.o. Overall, I think it's a great toy - it keeps all of my sons cars organized and he enjoys having his cars all in one place. The car slots are even big enough to hold two cars at once depending on the size of the car. Just be aware that the clasp can be weak.Customer Review: stay away from the fancy cases - this is all you need

We used matchbox cars as "rewards" while potty training my son; and as a result we must have over 100 cars. We started with this case to hold all the cars and when it filled up we went in search of another. for our second case, we decided to get fancy. We tried a case that was shaped like a wheel and opened on both sides. It was a nightmare. The lids never stayed shut and inevitably, one side or the other would pop open and all the cars would fall out. So we scrapped that, and bought a case that also had a car launcher at the top of it. It was also a piece of junk. The launcher worked poorly and only shot the car out a couple of inches, and the cover also kept popping open. So, we're back to this case again.
The case holds a minimum of 48 cars, but some of the smaller cars fit 2 in a slot. the case is durable, and the cover fits tightly (but is still easy enough for my 3 year old to open by himself). This case is really all you need.
