Toys and Games Reviews of Syma S107/S107G Colors VaryCustomer Review: This product does not need my endorsement Summary: 5 Stars
If you are like me, you've seen the 700+ reviews so far and most are really positive. This review will be no different, really except that I wanted to talk a little more about the CRASH details. I purchased two of these with the intention of replacing the first one knowing it would inevitably meet the same fate as all helicopters before it. Wow, I was wrong!
Now at first, I bought both of these for me. I have two boys at home and they break my stuff so I wanted these for ME! ME ME ME!
After a week or two, I was so impressed with the ease of flight that I loaned it to my 12 year old who mastered it in 3-4 minutes. I noticed most mistakes are made in controlling elevation, IE: too much then too little then...crash! But once that is mastered, controlling its movement is cake.
It is so easy that I let my 8 year old try it. Now 8 year olds are notorious for breaking stuff and my kid is no exception. He once broke my new bowling ball by tossing it outside down the driveway and into the street where it was hit by a car. Why? More importantly: WHY MY STUFF!?!
So hence is the basis of my review: How well does this toy survive when abused by an 8 year old?
I'm here to tell you: VERY WELL! And I will just get to the crux of the story by telling you the worst thing he did to my helicopter and how it survived...
Last week, he was flying it up the stairwell of our home. Let me tell you, that is a lot of fun and it is challenging to do because of the air current that gets circulated in a small space. But there was my 8 year old mastering the controls and having a great time. So ... I walked away thinking "Yeah, what a great toy! I can't believe he hasn't broken it yet" ... no more than 10 minutes later, he comes down to the basement crying because he broke it. *sigh* He handed it to me and it was completely dead. The power switch was on but the lights were off and the controller did nothing. Dang.
I asked him to tell the truth..."What happened?" - His response..."I flew it into the ceiling fan in my bedroom". - "Was the fan on?" - "yes...very fast, too" - *FACEPALM*
AUUGHHHHH!! Sure enough, the top rotor blades had GIANT chunks taken out! Arghh! Dang kid. Flew it into a high-speed ceiling fan. Can you believe that? It must be the Y chromosome.
So I take it upstairs and noticed that there were no parts that broke off. Literally, the helicopter was still intact, even that little balance bar at the top! So...I turned it off and back on again...WALLA! It was alive!! I grabbed the controller and wouldn't you know it: It flies nearly the exact same way!! Even with giant chunks out of the blades, it still flies. Granted, it has a vibration to it due to the imbalance but ... This thing is so tough that it took a full brunt of a ceiling fan, crashed to the ground and turned off.
I later learned that it has circuit protection built in as well. So if you fly it into carpet and it gets stuck but you gun it anyhow, it will shut off, protecting the motor from overload. WOW! The remedy: turn it off and back on again.
In the end, this little helicopter has been passed around from kid to kid to adult to kid to .... you name it and ... it still flies!! Unreal!
The 2nd one is still in the box, waiting for the first one to break! I'm shocked that a 30 dollar toy has lasted thing long:
Some thoughts:
1) I never use the remote to charge the helicopter. Instead, I use my iPhone wall charger (just a USB to 110v plug)
2) Purchase extra blades and an extra balance bar. It's just $6 more and will make the toy last even longer when YOUR kid flies it into the ceiling fan!
3) Check the gears inside when you first get it. One of my gears was misalighed. I used Krazy Glue and a toothpick to put the gear back
4) It can't hurt to maintain this thing: Use A1 oil and keep hairs out of the shaft and gears! Trust me! That will slow it down!
5) I get 15 minutes of flight per charge on mine. I use it until it can no longer lift BUT THEN I continue to spin the rotors until the unit shuts off. THEN I charge it. Seems to work for me.
6) The achiles heel of this toy: The top balance bar. Its delicate so the WORST THING you can do is fly it up into the ceiling. There is no protection from the high speed center hitting a flat object at a high rate of speed. Those parts are VERY DELICATE and plastic so .... Seriously, if you do one thing: Avoid hitting the ceiling.
7) Have fun! I challenge my kids to land it in the most difficult places, like the fireplace mantle, coffee cup, etc. It's SO FUN!
The most challenging task so far (8 year olds idea) is to go upstairs, fly it out through one window and back in to another! The risk is high because if you mess up, it has a long way to go down so ... DONT MESS UP!. ha ha ha... It's great when you are piloting the thing and your hands are sweating from the pressure of flying it outdoors while you are indoors! For a real challenge, do this in a 2nd story window! Ha ha ha!
