Toys and Games Reviews of Zillionz Talking Cash RegisterCustomer Review: you can make your own barcodes too Summary: 4 Stars
I was a little leery about buying this because of the reviews but I am happy with it so far. The 2 and 4 year old both like and can play with it. The on/off button is a different color so they easily learned how to turn it on and off without help. The scanner is easy to pick up and hold and we haven't had trouble with the length of its cord. The microphone amplifies nicely and does not distort the kids' voices too much.
The scanner is reasonably easy to use but it's not totally clear what to expect from it. You are supposed to line up little arrows on the stickers with arrows on the scanner, suggesting that each barcode sticker is supposed to give a specific readout, but we've found that a given barcode will produce different "readouts" on successive scans. It's not a problem for us: the kids are just happy to get a response from the machine. But I could see how with older kids they might find that annoying. I would have liked more specific instructions about what to expect from the barcodes.
We did find that we could draw fake barcodes on index cards with a black sharpie, and the scanner recognizes those and produces a readout. That makes me very happy as it means we do not have to go out of our way to save the barcode stickers and that the machine will still be fun when we DO run out of stickers. Also presumably one could photocopy the barcode sheet that comes with the toy, and just cut out the barcodes and tape them to objects.
Customer Review: FANTASTIC, FANTASTIC, FANTASTIC! Summary: 5 Stars
We bought this because our 9 and 2 year old daughters like playing store. We bought it at a big box store for a very good price. It came with paper money, plastic coins, credit card, bar code stickers, and batteries. It has 3 language preferences, English, Spanish, and French. That feature keeps my oldest entertained every time she plays with this. The microphone is a very nice feature as well and as another reviewer mentioned it doesn't distort their voices. The number pad works the same way as a basic calculator.
We save some food boxes and containers for their store.(coffee creamer cans, band aid box, butter container, etc) We made copies of the bar code stickers too so we can reuse them. Our daughter was the one that figured out it will scan real bar codes. However, the prices are random that way. We've had this register for a month now and the kids still love playing with it. Plus, it's survived being dropped down the stairs. Oh, and our oldest used it at our yard sale for her snack/drink stand. I highly recommend this toy.
Customer Review: LOVE IT! Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this for my kids for Christmas and we love it. Both of my girls, 7, and 2 1/2 can operate the register and use the scanner. And just a hint: scan the barcodes into your computer, print them out on sticker paper, and then you can have all the extra barcodes you need. I also bought the Melissa and Doug wooden pantry food and wooden fridge food to go with this - the wood makes a nice firm, smooth surface to put the barcodes on. I really recommend this. I particularly recommend Fat Brain Toys as the seller - others were selling this for $60, but I got it for $33 and Fat Brain Toys shipped it in less than an hour after I ordered it. This company is SERIOUS about getting your stuff to you!

Customer Review: Fun & trouble free!! Summary: 5 Stars
When I read some of the other reviews for this cash register, I was worried that this could be a bad experience as a gift for my daughter's birthday. However, there were no problems with the toy. Everything worked perfectly! My 4-year-old daughter loves it, particularly the microphone and switching to different languages. She just scans anything with a bar code on it...haven't messed with the stickers (I could imagine them stuck everywhere in the house). Since she doesn't really understand the prices, she doesn't mind that the prices only vary between about 3 different ones. This may be a concern for an older child. She loves swiping the credit card! You would think someone would come up with a design that would allow you to get coins that drop behind the drawer. This was a problem with cash registers when I was a child too. I need to get a small bag for the coins, and that should end that problem. Definitely a great toy for the price!!!
Customer Review: What a waste! Summary: 2 Stars
I bought this register for my 4 year old for Christmas. I never saw any barcode stickers but we did find that it would scan real barcodes but they all came up as 4.99 or .99. I liked the microphone and the fact that it kept a running total of the barcodes. I didn't like how they gave more denominations of money than there were slots for in the drawer. I would have lived with all of those things, the reason I returned the register was the drawer would not open. We were able to pull it open a couple of times and that was it. When I went to the store to exchange it I saw 3 that had obviously been returned on the shelf. I opened another box and tried to open it's drawer and it would not open. That is when I decided to return the item instead of exchanging it. Bottom line choose another register unless you don't want to use the drawer.
