Customer Review: Cool toy but could use some improvement

I bought this register a few months ago for my then 4-yr-old son for his fundraiser sale. I don't know if it was more fun for me or for him. :) Since we had to have real price tags, I scanned the included bar codes into my computer and modified the spacing in photoshop so as to include a price next to each bar code, and when I cut them, I ended up with tags that I could fold in half. On one half was the bar code and the other the price. I saved the modified price tag sheet on my computer and can print them any time he runs out. Then we attached the prices to the items he was selling. Depending on the items, for some we ended up punching holes in the tags and attaching the prices with strings, or taping the price to the item if the item had a hard surface. But it's soooo much easier to just get a tagging gun with barbs for about $8 with shipping, and then you can really have "real" price tags. But then of course an adult definitely has to help because the tagging gun has a sharp needle.
He had a blast and the register worked perfectly well. I saw a lot of negative comments about the ability of the scanner, and I just wanted to clarify that it does read the prices correctly each time if you use it as follows: you must let the scanner touch the bar code (just hold the tag flat up against the scanner) and be sure to allign the tips of the arrows on the tag so that they point to and touch the tips of the arrows on the scanner, like this: ><. Again, this works like a charm. So much so that I think I'll use this register for our upcoming garage sale and just make the prices in the range available on this toy, which range from $0.99 to $49.99.
One word of caution: If the register drawer has coins in it and if it is tipped over or flipped upside down, which kids do when they carry it to another room to "set up shop", the coins will fall behind the money drawer and then it's very hard to get them out. I "strategically" shook the thing for a good 15 minutes to get out one coin at a time. In my opinion the drawer should have been made removable, so that if this happens it's easier to get the money out.
Also the register times out after one minute and your open transaction is lost. I think the time out should be more like 3 minutes to allow kids to make up their mind and complete the "sale" because it is very frustrating for them to hear "thanks for playing, goodbye", when they are half way through ringing up their items and now they have to start over. There should also be an OFF button if they want to turn it off sooner than 3 minutes.
To make it the perfect toy, I would also add more price options as there are only 6, and provide better instructions on how to use the scanner as evidently it's not intuitive and people just write it off as a bad scanner. Of all the toy cash registers out there, as far as I know this is the only one with a real working scanner. I would also add a coin game or two, like some of the other registers have, particularly the Learning Resources Teaching Cash Register, which "Helps children practice coin recognition, addition, subtraction and place value with 4 engaging games." I actually bought that register for my son as well, and he liked it for the games, but the scanner wasn't really a scanner, as it just produced a random price readout when the "scanner" button was pressed, and even the games were only fun until something went wacky and the register was reading coins incorrectly, like it said that a nickle was a dime, etc. (all coins were recognized incorrectly), so we just returned it and kept this one.
So to summarize, a fun register, the best out there for the money, but we're waiting for an improved version while enjoying this one for now.
