Customer Review: Backyard Safari Bug Vac -- good for the basement, too!

We got this toy for my son two years ago (when he was three-years-old) and it has gotten a LOT of use... from all of us! While my kids use it for its intended purpose, sucking up bugs outside and looking at them under the built in magnifying glass, I have used it plenty of times to trap nasty wolf spiders in our basement. I've always had issues with squishing those things with a shoe, so this is a perfect solution. The flat nozzle is great for trapping them when they wriggle up against the edge of the carpet, and the circular nozzle is perfect for catching things that are running across the middle of the room.
Although it does have three suction modes, we've always left it on the "high" setting. It's nice that it comes with two chambers as well. My kids have trapped all kinds of things with it, and we've had a lot of fun looking up their catches online to try and identify what they have found.
This toy was definitely a great purchase. I've bought two more for friends with kids my son's age and they've all raved about it, too. I think the manufacturer age rating (ages 8 and up) is way off, though. Younger kids can have a lot of fun with this toy as well.

You can view the bugs through the magnifier in the capsule. Then you can either release the insects back into the outdoors or into the Backyard Safari Bug Habitat (sold separately), built especially to house small insects.
