Toys and Games Reviews of Step2 Naturally Playful SandboxCustomer Review: GREAT SAND BOX!! Summary: 5 Stars
We love this sand box. It is attractive; we placed it next to our herb garden and it looks very natural. It is durable and definitely made to withstand the outside. The cover's shape helps to keep it in place during wind and helps rain water to drain down as well as keep enough space on the inside for larger toys that stay nicely protected. It has ventilation holes and yes, there is a chance you get some bugs and small animals in, although it has not happened to us, you need that to ventilate unless you want your kid to play with moldy sand. It fits about 4-5 bags of play sand to fill it up about halfway. The sand in it stays wet just right, perfect for sandcastles. Dry sand is no fun. I find the edges to be quite ok to sit on, no pain at all. To smooth the edges like some reviewers suggested would take away from the rocky natural desing. It is also a perfect size, to my opinion, for 1-2 kids. We have one and it serves us great. Mommy plays with him, and it fits the two of us just fine. This sand box is absolutely perfect and we are very pleased with our purchase. Great present for our 2 year old for his birthday. I have NOTHING bad to say about this. All absolutely perfect, well thought off and well built. This is very rare for me to be 100% pleased with toys these days, well this one is the winner. If I could I'd give it 10 stars.
Customer Review: Fun in the sand! Summary: 5 Stars
We purchased this sandbox several months ago after reading all of the positive reviews on this website. It has lived up to its five star rating! Our toddler really enjoys playing in this sand box. The "natural" design reminds him of a stone castle and he loves to be king of his sandbox!
We filled it with 200 pounds of play sand and still have lots of room for numerous trucks, shovels, rakes, pails, seashells, sifters and assorted sand toys. The lid is sturdy (my son has stood on it and it always pops back into shape) and has a high, domed center that allows us to store everything inside. We have had several violent wind/rain storms, and the lid has stayed on securely and kept the sand perfectly dry. And I don't think that color-fading over the years will be an issue with the tan plastic (unlike some of the bright red or green sandboxes that we also considered).
The 4 corner seats allow kids (and some parents!) to sit and play without getting sand in their pants. You can fit 1, 2 or 3 small children in or around the box at one time, but I don't think it's large enough for a bigger crowd.
You won't be disappointed with this sandbox! It will provide your kids many hours of fun.
Customer Review: My daughter's favorite! Summary: 5 Stars
How fun is it? My mother-in-law gave this to my daughter for her 1st birthday. Now, one year later, this is still one of her very favorite toys. We put it under a tree for shade (since Florida summers can be very hot) and she can sit for hours in the "box" (as she calls it) without tiring of the fun! Another funny point -- my beagle thinks it's a great platform for his squirrel chasing adventures! We've caught him up on top of the lid numerous times! (Strong lid! He weighs 30 pounds!) How durable? This sandbox also survived the 2004 Florida hurricane season unscathed! My one tiny complaint is that the lid is apparently not secure enough to prevent bugs and leaves from getting in. However, I guess that's hard to prevent right next to a tree. Educational value? If you read about children's brain development in early years, you learn how important sand and water play are for preschoolers. I'd much rather have my daughter play in the sandbox for hours than sit and watch a movie or even educational TV! As someone else said, though, be prepared for the sand mess -- sometimes we just go straight to the tub for a rinse!
Customer Review: Great sand box - be careful about buying sand! Summary: 5 Stars
I want to thank M. Beatrice for planting the seed in my mind about "safe" play sand. I read the review, bought this sand box for my one-year old daughter and went to Home Depot to buy Play Sand. The label said it was specifically for use in sandboxes and washed, filtered, etc., so I bought four bags.
When I was unloading it at home, the red warning label caught my eye "Warning: This product contains chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer". I couldn't believe it, so checked the sand manufacturer's website [...] and sure enough, it's silica sand, known to cause cancer. Good grief and it's legal to sell this stuff for children's sand boxes?
Yes, it's cheap, less than $20 for 200 lbs. But what price do we put on our kid's health? Back it goes and I begin my search for exorbitantly priced "safe sand". (For ideas, type in "safe play sand" in your search engine.) But who cares? At least I won't have to worry about my daughter spending hours playing in a toxic pit! Thanks again, M. Beatrice....
Customer Review: Still going strong after a year in harsh southern conditions Summary: 5 Stars
We got this sandbox for my younger son's first birthday. We have now had it for a year. We have it in our backyard by our patio and it looks great. Really blends in and is not an eyesore. The rounded top is very sturdy and the boys (now 2 and almost 4) can stand on it and it doesn't bow in or anything. However it is lightweight enough to be easily taken off. We live on the southern coast where we get lots of wind, rain and sun. It has held up marvelously and still looks new. We have a lot of mold and mildew problems with our outside toys because of the humidity, but this has held up very well. We've never had leaking problems either. I like the seats in the corners for the kids to sit on. Although they most often sit right in the sand of course. We keep all the sand toys housed in the box which is convenient. We do have to be careful of spiders deciding to make it their home, but I just make sure to check it before they begin playing. It easily fits 2-3 children with plenty of room. I would highly recommend this sandbox.
