Toys and Games Reviews of Step2 Naturally Playful SandboxCustomer Review: Fantastic, Durable Sandbox; Great Price Too Summary: 5 Stars
We have had this sandbox for almost 3 years now. The top has been used as a see-saw and a wading pool, and has stood the test. Our two girls (3.5 & 1.5 years) play in it every sunny day they get the chance. The "seats" are quite sturdy. They will support a 150-200 lb. adult, but have begun to sag ever-so-slightly after 3 years of doing this.
The size is reasonable, and accommodates my two girls pretty well. When a friend comes to visit, there do tend to be squabbles over space. Honestly, we couldn't have something bigger though. This sandbox has already moved to a new house once, and we'll likely be moving again in a few years, so something larger wouldn't work.
The top, being textured, does accumulated a lot of mildewy residue. This cannot be washed off, and someone interested in really pristine new-appearing sandbox might be offended by this. I actually don't much care about those sort of aesthetics.
All told this has been a really great little sandbox. It sits on the patio, always ready to be played with and requires almost no upkeep or fuss.
For those interested in the issue of play sand safety, I will share our experience.
After looking at Home Depot and Lowe's and not feeling satisfied that their play sand had been adequately cleaned and filtered, we fortunately stumbled upon a "natural" or "tropical" play sand made by Old Castle/Southdown (ie. not ground quartz, but collected from a natural source of sand, and then filtered, cleaned and sterilized) at True Value. It was aragonite beach sand, nice stuff. If you can find this stuff locally, it's worth the effort. We used about 250 lbs., spent maybe (...) to fill the box pretty much up to the top. By the time we needed to refill, the tropical sand was no longer available (at least in our area), so we bought KolorScape made by the same brand, as it was naturally sourced play sand. KolorScapes play sand is still superior to some of the other brands in my opinion. It seems to be more coarsely ground, and well-washed on appearance, and does not require further rinsing. It comes pre-dampened, so there isn't crazy dust when you empty it into the box.
You shouldn't have to pay exorbitant prices and buy some crazy specialty sand online. Honestly, we couldn't afford the online stuff at the time, and I imagine we're not alone.
We recently had to refill a third time. We could no longer find the KolorScapes sand and after going to every local store we bought a 'natural' sand by Sakrete. I was immediately taken aback by how dusty this stuff is, and it's obvious despite the fact that it's been moistened before packing it. After re-reading a lot of stuff online, I came to this conclusion: If you can't afford better than a dusty, inferior sand, do try to find some from a natural source. It's the grinding of the quartz in the mined sand that creates the kind of particulate matter than is inherently dangerous. In fact, it's my opinion (And I'm not alone here) that the play sand that is made from mined, crushed quartz should be banned. Sand on the beach - which in many areas consists primarily of silica - is endlessly tumbled and most fine particles do not have the sharp edges that cause it to become embedded permanently and irreversibly in the lungs, the kind of damage that over time can lead to silicosis. We rinsed our Sakrete sand, mixing it occasionally, until it ran clear. It took a couple of hours. Because it is, nonetheless, a silicate-based sand, we will keep the sand moistened enough to where there are no airborne particles. Besides it makes better sand castles that way. I have read endlessly on this issue, and it's my belief that this is a safer alternative to buying 'Safe Sand' at (...)/bag, a luxury even the most concerned parent cannot really afford.
