Toys and Games Reviews of Step2 Bookcase Storage ChestCustomer Review: Just what i needed Summary: 4 Stars
This is exactly what I needed in my little one's nursery. I just got it about a week ago now for a 1st birthday gift as he needed some practical items.
We needed a shelf to hold CD player and speakers that hides the cords and keeps it high away from his current reach. We also needed a storage chest that held his seemingly never-ending toy / book collection, to be stable but preferably not wood, in a white color and doesn't take too much space.
This storage chest fits all those criteria. I use the top shelf to hold some of his cds, cd player, and speakers. There's still room for other things if needed. I'm sure one day he will be tall enough to reach up there but I think I got at least till he's a foot taller which won't be for a while probably...or at least until he understands what don't touch means.
*On the middle/second shelf I only put things that will not hurt him if he were to knock them over because he can reach that shelf quite easily right now. So I only put soft cloth books, soft cloth toys, teethers, and stuffed animals.
In the bottom chest, I love how much room there is in there. I got his big stuffed animal turtle, books, box of small toys, and still room for more. I keep it closed for the most part unless it's playtime because he loves to just pull everything out. I like the fact that the lid hides away and is very easy to open. My son has not quite figured out how to lift it to open it yet but has stuck his hand in there. It has not lifted enough to fall on his hand but I actually don't think it's able to smash his hand because there's a gap.
It was shorter than I expected but still big enough storage space I think. Just shelf space is not that much.
Well made and was easy to assemble. It was just 3 pieces: lid, shelf, and bottom chest. You do need a drill to drill 2 holes to screw the shelf onto the bottom part. There are indents where you should drill but it's not ready with open holes.
Customer Review: Sturdy, roomy toybox Summary: 5 Stars
I was getting desperate. The kids toys were in regular gray plastic storage boxes and not everything fit, so there were toys everywhere! Plus, to get the kids to clean up was like pulling teeth! I did my research and decided to buy these. I bought two of these, one for my son (red) and one for my daughter (pink). All of their toys fit in there with room to spare. These boxes are less expensive than others and plastic, but they are roomy, safe, sturdy and I like the shelves...they can put books and/or toys there. Assembly was not difficult and I really don't see the screws as a safety issue at all. I usually let my husband assemble things but I looked at the instructions and thought "how hard can this be?" It wasn't hard at all. I had both put together in less than 30 minutes. The toy boxes are white which isn't the greatest, but I let my kids decorate with wall stickers: RoomMates RMK1170SCS Graphic Flowers Peel & Stick Wall Decals & RoomMates RMK1045SCS Amazing Spider-Man Peel & Stick Wall Decals.
Most importantly the kids enjoy their toy boxes and they do help more with putting away their toys without complaining! I finally gained some sanity in our house!
Customer Review: Nice Toy Storage. Summary: 5 Stars
Bought this recently for my second child's toys. I have an earlier version of this toy chest that does not have the second shelf, just a single platform across the top of the box. A few observations:
1. The quality of both seems to be very good.
2. The new one seems to be bigger (wider across the front).
3. Yes, the new one is in two pieces and must be screwed together, but that was not a problem. It took about five minutes, tops. I recommend using a drill to drill a small pilot hole for the screws. The two pieces fit together snugly at this time.
4. The threads of the screws are exposed inside the toy box, but I think it would be very hard for a child to injure himself on these screws. If you are worried, you could cover the threads with masking or electrical tape.
5. You can see outlines of the toys through this chest, but I do not believe that the plastic is thinner than previous versions. This is more a result of the color of the plastic than the thickness of the plastic. The new chest is white while our old one is a darker tan color.
In summation, this is a large, well-built toy chest that holds lots of toys, big and small. My soon-to-be toddler loves to just stand there and get all the toys out. Every night we put them back. Then repeat.
Customer Review: Great for books and toys! Summary: 5 Stars
I've been looking for a toy chest that is durable, large and also had a bookshelf, this is the best one in the market(the only one with both features in one). My son instantly got inside it and had a blast. Then we stuffed all his toys in it (everything fit!!) and placed his books on the shelf. Perfect for organizing EVERYTHING!! In the picture it looks sort of beige, it is actually a very nice clean white. It's about the same price online and in stores. Absolutely a must buy!!! Some people mention that it has been re-designed and didn't like the changes, I don't know what the previous design was, but this one is still a great toy chest. The best feature not seen on other toy chests is the slanted front lid. My son can reach inside and take out all his toys with no problem (here comes the mess again. . ) , he's 2 years old and easily lifts the lid and even tries to slide it back into it's (hiding) mode. Very child friendly, no sharp corners. I did see the screws inside that some people felt was a hazard to the children because they are sort of exposed, but I noticed that the screws go entirely through to the other side, so the sharp end of the screw isn't exposed at all. Very happy with this purchase, worth the money and I highly recommend it to all parents looking for a practical toy chest.
Customer Review: They have redesigned this-- for the worse! Summary: 3 Stars
Please take a close look at what you're buying. It is no longer the one-piece unit. This storage chest was redesigned by Step 2, and I wish it hadn't been! There are two main problems now-- first is that the bookshelf is not as deep, which means it can store only small books. Don't know about you, but about half of my daughter's books are fairly big hardcovers. They won't fit.
The other problem is that it now comes in two pieces that you have to screw together. I was really surprised to see that when you assemble it, the two screws simply stick out into the toybox... there is no covering over them, so if your child reaches in or climbs in, they could get hurt on these screws. For purely aesthetic reasons, I also prefer the one-piece design.
I don't have the old model to compare it to, but I am told the plastic is also flimsier in the new model. I know that I can actually see through the white plastic (I can tell what toys are inside it), so that doesn't give me a whole lot of confidence.
All that said, I still prefer it to most other toyboxes. The toybox is roomy and cute. My 2-year-old has no problem opening it or reaching her books off the shelf, and even though I'm annoyed that it's not deep enough, I'm glad there is a shelf anyway.
