Toys and Games Reviews of Step 2 LifeStyle Dream KitchenCustomer Review: Making this kitchen more hip! Summary: 5 Stars
Putting this together took me two and a half late-night hours--even though I laid out everything ahead of time and used my cordless drill/screwdriver. But I love a challenge so it was fun to try to figure out how to make holes where there were none. I also made some design decisions. I decided against the pillars, as they distract from the look, I think. The image of the farm is cool and all, but I thought it looked more modern and realistic without a blurry, obviously fake window. Plus I nixed the fruit border to blend more with our family room. Since I placed my daughter's kitchen in its own little niche against a window, I didn't add the backsplash so the sun can shine through into her sink. The basket weave for the fruit bin looked too fake as well--I decided it looks more like the trash bin in my kitchen without it so I left it off. I did add the phone and appliance decals as they seem to add to the great design of this kitchen. I never thought a toy kitchen could look good in a public area, but it really does.
I was looking forward to seeing my daughter run to the kitchen with glee the next morning. Though my back was a little sore from all the maneuvering, it felt like Christmas in September when I woke up.
However, unlike the other reviewers' children, my daughter was not impressed. OK, so she's 18mos, but she's really into pretend play. I thought she'd go nuts, given the amount of time she's spent in my kitchen neatly stacking and sorting Tupperware, pie pans, measuring cups, and other items in the few cabinets we've left open for her. When I'm cooking on my stove, she takes the initiative of handing me spoons. She loves taking out a utensil and bowl and "mixing." Here's a natural cook, I thought.
But she just looked at it and whined for her morning banana. Seriously, my stomach sank. Was she insulted by this plastic thing since she could play in mommy's kitchen? Hmmm...maybe I should have added all the decals. My bad.
I didn't want to push it on her, but over a couple of days I showed her a few features and then I'd walk into my kitchen, which is right around the corner from hers. The next thing I knew, I was punching buttons on my microwave--which is installed into my cabinet, like hers--and I'd notice her standing behind me, then running to her kitchen. Then I'd hear the beep, beep of her microwave--which she reaches by tippy toe and it's so cute! It wasn't long before I lost my sous chef. When I'm cooking, so is she--and she especially likes the sizzling pan. When I'm washing dishes, I ask if she's washed hers and she gets to work w/a little dish cloth I gave her. I love peeking around the corner to see her at work; last night I caught her repositioning her pizza in her oven w/a spatula. The only thing that makes me sad is that she tries to eat what she cooks.
Only a week later, it's music to my ears to hear her clinking away in her kitchen as I busy myself with other tasks around the house. I've no doubt this will be a favorite toy for years to come. And if, as she gets older, she decides she likes those pillars and decals after all, I've put them aside for her.
